I think I'll donate to Wiki today. Wiki and my local NPR affiliate KPCC.

I donated $25 last week. As much as I use it, donating felt like something I should be doing on a regular basis.

I just never realized how much it took to keep it running :)

Here's where the money goes
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...imedia_Foundation_Plan_FINAL_FOR_WEBSITE_.pdf

Flipping through that really is an interesting look into what happens behind the scenes at Wikimedia. It's interesting to see what it takes. While there are some issues with wikipedia (as you would expect with any source of information that anyone can contribute to) it's amazing how well it actually works and I really think its something worth supporting.

I wonder how much wikipedia could bring in through online advertising. Probably hundreds of millions with the traffic they bring in. I would rather see a 728x ad across the top instead of Jimmy Wales and huge please donate banner on the top of every page.

What's so "rediculous" about it?

lol

It probably sounds ridiculous to him because, like 99% of ATOT posters, he doesn't have a clue how the real world functions, especially the business world.

Click that [X] in the ad banner and it should go away unless you delete your wikipedia cookies.

We should start an Occupy Wikipedia to find out where all of that money is really going. My guess is hookers and blow. I host websites at hostgator for $100/year.

Check out the link in post #8 to see a high level breakdown of expenses.

Salaries, wages,
recruiting and other hiring

costs = 13+ million

95 employees. On average they cost about $140k per year? That number is up over $4 million from last year. Seems kinda high for a company that wants to operate solely by donation. They want 1.6 million for travel
