WiFi + WEP performance

ugh

Platinum Member
Hi folks,

Anyone here knows the performance hit when using WEP encryption (128bit)? I'm using a 802.11b connection.

Thanks!

Depends on hardware, on Dlink-2000AP for example, there is no performance drop to speak of (2.95MB/s vs 2.94MB/s)

The Linksys should be about 5-10% down due to WEP.

I.e transfer of 500Kb/sec. Should go down to 475-450Kb/sec.

:sun:

For surfing the net the B standard with WEP enabled is still well above what cable modem offers for bandwidth. If you're asking due to internet based reasons... ie online game, downloads, etc you really won't be affected.

For shared files over the network... ie copying video files, music, etc etc from one room in the house to the next... the slight drop is going to be slightly noticeable.

I have BEFW11S4 router my roomie shared with his wireless on his laptop and he was using webcam, losing some of wireless speed while my pc wired with router and downloading some files. I don't know what speed he was losing so I had to stop downloading he can use webcam on his new Dell laptop.
