The router I gave a link to can be flashed with DD-WRT, but you really don't need third part firmware and if you do it wrong you'll brick your router.
 
I have 2 routers, 1 in the basement and 1 on the first floor. The whole house have 100% wifi coverage no matter where we're at. A single router isn't the best option as you may have dead spot.
