Wifi Router Keeps Crapping Out

I have a Netgear WGT624 "double" router that keeps dying on me. I thought it was a heat issue, so I put a fan on it and now it is cool. Even so, it still dies. It doesn't seem to be based on load, because it stays up during high network activity (albeit "choppy"). I do hav WPA encryption enabled and I use 802.11a with B+G radios disabled. My friend who also had a netgear router experienced similar issues, and when he switched over to a Dlink unit his problems went away.

Netgear used to make good stuff, but apparently they no longer do. Any ideas as to what could be causing these random crap-outs that require the router to be restarted (by power cycling).

Yeah the latest firmware was one of the first things I did and it didn't make any difference.

I'm thinking I'd be better off getting a nice commercial grade router and a standalone access point...but that's close to $1000 right there (for the good stuff).

It happened with an old netgear router I had, which i replaced with a new netgear router since the old one lasted for a few years... now it's happening to my new one too :(

I used to have this problem with my old SMC router whenever I had a lot of open connections (read: torrents) or just a lot of bandwidth going through the router. It would just overloaded and drop out the Wi-FI connection among other things. I recently purchased the DLink DGL-4300 and although it is kinda of pricey compared to the typical G router these days (read: crap routers), it hasn't dropped out what so ever in the months I've had it. This is with maybe 100s of open connections and a constant 600-1000kb/s download activity going through it. WiFI has never dropped and the router itself has never dropped. I don't use all the "gaming" features of the router, but it simply has high end hardware in there and a 200mhz chip to handle many connections so for me, it was well worth the extra money. It has gigabit lan to boot.

Yeah I was looking at that router. I think I will pick one up at BB and give it a try. I am sick of this netgear POS...
