WiFi range extender

I'm having problems setting up a new wifi range extender I got. It is the HAWKING HWABN1 Hi-Gain Wireless-300N Access Point/Bridge. I followed the instructions supplied and everything went as planned except I had to set the ip address (it wouldn't automatically find my DHCP). Now the next step is to unplug the Ethernet cord that connects to extender to the router during setup. I can connect to the wireless network that the extender makes as long as it is plugged into the router via ethernet and it works fine. However once I unplug it (which you have to do to position the extender somewhere in your house) I can still connect to it but I can no longer access the internet through it. I send packets to the network but do not receive them. My router is the Verizon Fios Actiontec router.
