Question WiFi mesh with wired PC question

Hello, have two Asus RT-AX1800S routers connected in a mesh network. My one router is connected directly to my modem upstairs. I have the other RT-AX1800S in the basement and my son's PC is connected to the LAN port via CAT 5e cable. I had looked up how to configure the routers a year ago or so and I thought I had them programed for a mesh network with a WiFi backhaul from the basement router to the upstairs router, and the setup had been working ok. I am on a 600 mbps plan and a speed test shows ~715 mbps from my PC in the upstairs room connected to the router then modem. My son used to get ~350 mbps from his PC in the basement which I had heard was about right, people had said that he should get about 1/2 the speed as I get up stairs. Recently he has only been getting ~110 mbps, I am wondering if there is a better way to program the routers? I can't easily get an Ethernet cable from the upstairs to the downstairs right now but I am working on that. I hope I explained this setup ok for you to understand. Here is a picture of the setup.
