sorry to beat the death out of this optimus but has anyone been able to do this? the following review says

"Virgin Mobile has locked down a feature or two, most notably wireless tethering, yet you can easily circumvent this restriction by downloading the Quick Settings app from the Android market, going to its customize screen, moving the Wi-Fi Hotspot control into view and then hitting the 'On' button."

has anyone bought this phone and actually done this successfully. it seemed a lot of people said this didnt work

It's an Android phone and it can be hacked to tether, in addition, it has EV DO revision A, which is faster than the Intercept's revision 0

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evolution-Data_Optimized

It looks like a great phone for the $, and for the pay as you go plan too.

I'm going to wait 1 more generation and upgrade my kids to a different phone on VM, I have 2 phones on VM, they're not thrilled with the Intercepts, but when they start paying their own cell bills, they can get whatever they want :)

Am also considering bumping them up to iPhones with the Straight Talk hack where you have a Nokia E71 IIRC, register the E71, and pop the SIM into an iPhone, get "unlimited" everything for $45 on an iPhone... The iPhones will have to drop a bit before I seriously consider this, and it may be June or so when the iP5 comes out and iP4's drop a bit on the used market... I'm already seeing 16GB iP4's for $450-$500 on Craigslist...

i know i should just shut up about this and walk over to radio shack and buy one of these for myself

I'm just messing with you. :)

I couldn't resist going in to look at one this week. I don't need another phone but I'm so tempted to get one for the hell of it.

yeah that is sort of what i was thinking of doing as well, waiting for the next gen prepaid phones with gigahertz chips but when theyre selling them for only 150 i might as well get both.

the other possiblility would be getting a metropcs 4g phone for $40 but i havent looked into that yet, they didnt have anything about it on their website yet, i just saw a billboard

what network is the iphone hack on--tmobile?

It's a little pricey, but if you were to say find an e71 on eBay all beat to death, but still working, and snag a used iPhone, even a 3GS is pretty decent, you're golden. Of course, like all phone hacks, the carrier could figure out what you're doing & likely disable your line of service, some people have re-sold their e71's and gotten busted when the IMEI shows up in Straight Talk's system as registered 2X's, so you have to keep the original e71...

Port your 3GS # to Straight Talk, and do the Straight Talk hack with it. How much are you paying for the 3GS/month?

Then jailbreak the 3GS, buy MiWi, and you have tethering.

I was looking on eBay at the Straight Talk e71's and you can find a beat up one to pull the hack...

why are you saying to get e71 on ebay, howard forums say they are at walmart. is it a discontinued or particularly expensive phone?

I look at the cheapest way to do things, if you're going to have to keep the e71, and not use it, why not score a used one and save $100? A used e71 sitting in a drawer versus a new one sitting in a drawer makes no material difference to me, except that I wasted $100 or so...

I do currently have an LG Optimus V, and have confirmed that the quick settings wi-fi hotspot works.

However, I definitely wouldn't risk using it often since I don't want my VM account canceled. The pricing is just too sweet. I actually like the phone quite a bit as well.

also,
has anyone bought this phone and actually done this successfully. it seemed a lot of people said this didnt work

I'm sure that a lot of the people who said it didn't work probably didn't know that you have to add the wi-fi hotspot setting in preferences. It took me a day or so of head-scratching before I found out that it needed to be done.
