Wifi extender

I have a router downstair, and wifi extender upstair. How to know or make sure that the extenders get their source signal direct from router instead of each other?

When you configure an Extender you can "tell it" to be coupled with a specific IP/MAC/SSID.

My experience with some Linksys / Cisco E2000 (? dual-band N600, flat, dual antennas), with Tomato firmware, and WDS and wireless bridge mode, with three nodes, was that it worked best with a hub-and-spoke type configuration, using Wireless bridge mode for the "spokes".

Some devices can link up by pressing the WPS button on the router then the extender. This specifically pairs up the devices to each other. I did this with mine. And I had to do it twice to get it to pair up for both bands.

Let me understand this.
If router WPS to extender #1, then router WPS to extender #2. Both extenders WILL get signal from router and not from each other, even though both extenders are nearer to each other than to router. Bcos router "talk" to both extenders with their own addresses.
Did I get it right?

Pretty much, yes, that's how I understand it. I am only using one with my setup but what I've read indicates that the "pairing" process is router to extender based.
