Wifi configuration

Hey, I am going of to University next year and am planning on living in res with some friends. There is an apartment style dorm that has 3 separate bedrooms, a lounge, bathroom and kitchen. I believe it is fairly large too. I was thinking of building a network server for the 3 of us but the problem is, I want something that isn't public to the whole school. If I were to buy a router, would I be able to plug it into an Ethernet port in the room and have our own WI-FI network or better yet since I don't know if there are any Ethernet ports, would it be able to 'feed' off the school's WI-FI network and create it's own protected network that only me and my friends can access? Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I think this would be extremely convenient..

It depends on how the schooll configured their system, and their willing to allow it.

The school wouldnt be able to find out if you bought a switch and another network card for each computer and put that card on another network and shared that way.
