Story at yahoo

Under an agreement with Wayport, SBC will offer daily access for $7.95 and monthly access to its Wi-Fi hot spots for $19.95.

So I pay $8 to use WIFI during the 45 minutes I'm actually in McDonalds? Or if I eat there 3 times a day and sit there all day then It's a good deal? Or it I eat at McDonalds every day then I can get the monthly rate?

How many times have you seen people set up shop with a laptop and such in McDonalds? I've never seen it.

Seems like this is just rediculous to me...

fast food restaurants are all about having you get your food, eat quickly, and then get out. i don't see how this will work well.

Get food from drivethrough, download emails/traffic information or more music files onto your carputer (see sig) while sitting in the carpark listening to any number of your thousands of songs :)

what's ridiculous is people eating at their $1k laptops ... so I don't see this taking off at all... I see Starbucks people do it, but I wouldn't unless it's an emergency. 1 spill and you're done.

There is a McD's right off the interstate near me that has it. I see truckers and business people using it all the time, while taking a break from driving. I used it once, because they were giving free trials away. The only complaint I have is that it only supports 802.11b, and it really wasn't that fast. I'm not sure what kind of connection they are using, but I suspect it may even be a full ISDN or cheap DSL.

Exactly.

By the time I get booted up, logged on, start browsing, and get into whatever I'm looking at... I'd normally already be done eating and on my way...

Why would 802.11b matter if you're browsing the Internet ? It's coming down at the same speed. If you were transferring between machines on the same LAN, then sure it matters if it were b vs. g...
