Is the Microsoft $$ WiFi adapter the only option? Any other recommendations to get WiFi on my Xbox 360 Elite?

What Queasy said ^ . The original XBox adapter works just as well, or get a DD-WRT/Tomato compatible router and turn it into a cheap and easy wifi adapter.

See, Queasy, when you pull the "in the FAQ" business, you've gotta close the thread, too. USE THEM MODERATOR POWERS!

Nah. Want to leave it open in case mode101wpb has any follow-up questions once he reads the FAQ.

I'm running a DD-WRT micro Linksys router. I had to do WDS instead of just making it a wireless bridge, so it was a little complicated getting it setup.

Thanks, my bad...

I guess then there is no way to use a USB WiFi adapter, the ones that look like a thumb dive, because of the drivers I imagine?

Yep. MS effectively locked out USB adapters. The only 3rd party option is ethernet adapters.

The router/bridge solution probably isn't a bad way to go for future connectivity if used in a HT environment. Seems like most new equipment is shipping with some form of connectivity on it.

Very true. I currently use this in my media cabinet:

D-Link DAP-1522

It isn't as cheap as some of the other options, but it is roughly the same price as the MS adapter and you get a lot more features, plus dual band N support.
