Currently contemplating upgrading.

Overall I'm pretty satisfied with my Netgear R7000. It's universally compatible with firmware like DD-WRT, Tomato, etc... The only thing that's starting to get to me is that we moved into a much bigger home (~4300 sqft) so range is an issue if you're on the opposite side of the home.

I tried getting a repeater - but all it ever seemed to do was crash the wifi overall. Maybe I wasn't doing it right - but what I was told that in general repeaters are just crappy.

Do you folks think it's worth upgrading to WiFi 6 - and if so, which one? Reviews I'm seeing are all over the board - with a lot of them getting quite negative reviews. I'm hoping for something that is relatively rock-solid with little to no crashing like my current R7000.

Do you have some sort of wired backhaul? If so, you can simply put another r7000 on the other side of the house.

Yeah I've kinda done that - personally I hate having 2 wifis but it is what it is for now.

Basically my ISP provided a router and I just use that one to expand downstairs via in-house wiring.

So I think you're saavy enough to move up to a ubiquiti setup. It may cost a bit and take a bit to set up, but everyone that's ever had one raves about it, especially the completely seamless handoff.

I'm DECENTLY savvy but mostly on old things because I just am not staying up to date with stuff like I used to haha.

Happen to have a decent guide or write-up/video about ubiquiti?

Is it mesh ? And what are your thoughts on going the mesh route?

Originally I was telling myself I would wait it out till WiFi 7 because it looks so promising... but it looks like were at least 3 years out from it still =/

In such situation is almost sure that Repeater would Not solve the problems and it is rare that what ever is the New marketing ploy (I.e, new single hardware unit) would do much either.

The only solid solution is to add more wired connected access points.

I would buy and tryout several Wi-Fi 6 mesh routers. They are extremely easy to install and you can find out for yourself. Each install will only take 20 minutes. Out of the 20 minutes, most it is waiting for the nodes to configure to the router. It is a great time buy too, discount on routers and extended time to do returns.
