OK so my wife's grandmother died at home a few minutes ago. she was in her late 70's and a couple of years ago they diagnosed her with a anuyerism(sp) behind her heart, said she had 6 months to live. for about a year and a half after that, she was in and out of the hospital, felt horrible all the time.
about 6 months ago she started feeling better, was able to go out and do things (albeit in a wheelchair), and was happy to be physically tired instead of just being tired from boredom. she had a great thanksgiving and christmas, the best she's been able to enjoy for the past 3 or 4 years.
about a year and half ago said grandmother's sister (my wife's great aunt) died of cancer. my wife and i lived with her at her house until she died, providing 24 hour care. another one of said grandmother's sisters died about 2 months ago...
here's a little story about something that disturbed me quite a bit. my wife's grandmother's daughter (my wife's aunt), who is in her late 40's or early 50's, is mentally retarded, has always lived w/ my wife's grandmother, and witnessed the whole thing. she pretty much understood what was going on, but being in a differnet mental state, it blew me away how she talked about it.
she, talking in her normal tone, explained it like this:
"momma pushed the button on her necklace and looked at me funny, then the phone rang. i answered the phone and they asked if we needed the rescue squad, so i went back to ask momma if we did, and she had thrown up blood all over her chair and the floor. when i asked her if we needed the rescue squad she went like this (she nodded her head) so i went back to the phone and told them to get here right away. i went back to momma and her mouth and eyes were open but she wouldn't say anything, so i shook her a bit and went like this (motioned a light slapping) to her face but she wouldn't wake up"
so, after a chain of phone calls, we happen to live closest, so we went over there. a coroner was there who luckily happened to be a family friend, and my wife's grandmother was already at the funeral home. my wife works at a nursing home, so she's used to cleaning up after old people die (that sounds harsher than i mean it to...), but the sheer amount of blood turned her stomach. i know i know, i'm sure the fact it was her grandmother's blood had a lot to do with it, but it literally looked like she vomited up all her blood... it was just sitting there on the carpet...
holy crap i'm glad i have booze right now
