She has something like 5000 images in her 'Camera' folder. Android 10, Nokia 7 Plus, 128GB MicroSD. She just tried to delete 26 images, the thumbnails go white, but the images don't get deleted even if she leaves the phone to it for a bit. Any ideas?

I could run a full filesystem check on the MSD card.

Is she doing this on the phone?
Using what app? Sometimes the app won't have permissions to delete stuff.
My phone is set so the Samsung gallery app can delete stuff on my phone but the Google photos app will only delete stuff in the cloud and can't get rid of stuff physically on the phone.

Unless it's a super expensive very good SD card it's gonna be very slow the more data is on it.
Adding to that a phone having to deal with 5000+ files isn't easy as is, just remember how it was to open a folder full of images on the PC before image caching and SSDs became a thing.

There is also a write protection tab on sd cards but I imagine that would be on enable if she used the sd card to take pictures with/on.

The stock google photos app. She can definitely delete stuff, I just took one pic and deleted it.

The MSD card I bought was Sandisk's Extreme type. "SanDisk Extreme 128 GB microSDXC Memory Card + SD Adapter with A2 App Performance + Rescue Pro Deluxe, Up to 160 MB/s, Class 10, UHS-I, U3, V30 , Red/Gold "

I wonder if the answer therefore is to file photos out of the Camera folder so that it doesn't have to process thousands of images in one go.

Are these images potentially in the 'cloud'? So deleting them gets rid of the space, but not the thumbnail as it is a placeholder?

cloud: nope. Might be worth double-checking, but considering the amount of images, I'm sure Google would have had a thing or two to say about it.
