Wife gives OK for BIG/Widescreen tv, need to choose

My wife said ok to buy new big/widescreen tv for our new house currently under construction,
I like the widescreens a lot, also the big screens.
I checked out the Hitachi and Sony models at CC (yuck)
She says I have 2k to spend (maybe more , hehe ;P )
Help me choose!

Not that I have overwhelming experience in this arena, but I like Sony's Wega.

Is that money for just the TV, or does it include the sound, dvd, receiver, etc?

I can't help you out about the tv but I just wanted to point out a little discrepancy in your role as a household authority figure. 😉

Your gonna find both brands are going to run in the 2400 dollar range and teh sony in the 3000 for a good one (dont get the cheapest version they have though)

I would personally get a Toshiba... you get more for your money if your strictly looking for a rear projection TV... Give me some more info about what type of room it will go in. Specifically is it a living room that is in the open or not. I would recommend a projector over both thing if you can get the room dark. You will find that the PQ is just as good and the screens can go as big as your room allows..... and they run about 2500 - 3000 for a good one that can handle widescreen pictures.

Vega is tube only, or am I mistaken?

From some research I've been doing it looks like you really only have two options.
Mitsubishi and Hitachi. Now which... I guess it depents on your likes. One seems to have a sharper picture.... the other better colors. Not even talking about the different adjustment options.
And last but not least it depends on the room you put it into and how the big clunker goes with your existing equipment & stereo?

Confused yet?

I suggest you go to a place like HiFi buys. Yes... more expensive, but you don't have to buy there. They seem to have the best service (always need a little luck finding a good sales guy) and can explain the differences to you.

Narrow it down to 2-3 Models you like and then go to Deja and do a search on them. You will find out the most interesting things! 😉

What is with needing to get wife's approval for many married couples?

Personally, I'd go with the Mitsubishi. Out of the box they are the best picture quality. Other brands, like Toshiba, can have great picture, but require a professional to come adjust it for you. That costs about $500. Some people find that they want a tech to come out at least once a year. To me that means the TV gets more expensive for you the longer you own it. Do some research at dedicated forums like DigitalTheater, AVS Forum, or HomeTheater Spot. Personally, the AVS Forums are too high-end for most people. I find the DigitalTheater forums to be a pretty decent balance. Be sure to use the search feature wherever you look.

I just got aSony KP 61HS30 & love it, just can't get used to the 16:9 aspect ratio.

Sony's got a great reputation for build quality & service, Toshiba is best for bang for the buck, everyone else makes pretty good stuff, but stay away from RCA...

The Sony Wega 40" 4:3 is a nice TV, though its in the $3500 range. Or do you mean rear projected 60" TVs?

Another vote for the WEGA's. I have one and I wouldn't buy anything else. They're great tubes and great TV's.

Wega's aren't tube only, they come in projection form, but they cost around $5000-5500 US, and there are also WEGA flat panels too.

Well, I have Wega already 27"
We are building a new house, and I am getting the carpenters to build me an entertainment center into the "wall" in the living room.
So I have to get him all the sizex...they just poured the footers, so it will be awhile.
I looked at the sony 51" projection the one for about 2499 at CC, and really liked it, clear picture, I have yet to look at the mutsu's and others.
I did look at the comparable hitachi, which the picture did not look as clear.
I guess I will look around some more, I don't want to spend more than 2 grand if i can help it, houses are not cheap, especially when you have to fork out %10 plus what extras cost at closing.
Any certain models from 41"-53" I should really look at besides the Sony's and hitachi's?
thx

I just went through this entire process. My words of advice:

1. Whatever you buy, get it from www.onecall.com They are awesome and their prices are fabulous. If you do purchase from them, ask for Jason. He took my order over the phone, called me a half an hour later to give me the tracking #, and called me twice in a week after it had been delivered to make sure everything was going well. Their prices include shipping and there is no tax for out of state purchases. I bought my Toshiba 57H81 from them last month for $2519 shipped. The best price I could find locally was $200 more, plus I would have had to pay for tax and shipping.

2. If you are going RPTV, Toshiba's are awesome. I basically narrowed my choice to a few brands, then did some reading at www.hometheaterspot.com and www.hometheaterforum.com. They basically echoed my sentiment that the Toshiba H81 and HX81 series are best buys for the money. As I mentioned before, I have the 57H81 and I absolutely LOVE it.

If I had to decide again, I would definitely go the widescreen route again. I fought with that issue for a while, due to the fact that my wife and I watch a lot of cable TV and sports. The 4:3 TV's are great, but I just love the 16:9 the more I look at it.

I second buying from Onecall and Jason... join the forums on hometheaterspot.com and you can get in on major group buys... I got a really good deal on my parents' Toshiba 42H81 a few weeks ago... Jason is an excellent salesperson and has a very good reputation with the rest of the guys on the forum. They are authorized dealers for a good number of respectable manufacturers, so you won't have any problems with the manufacturer's warranty if you buy through them.

the people who are reccomend a sony for a RPTV are smoking crack,

Pioneer and Mitsu makes the nice ones, pioneer elitles are very nice. but expensive,

Costco sells Pioneer HD Ready RPTV for around $2400, my romate just got one its pretty nice, i like it a lot.
