I understand we aren't in his position, but I would much rather be dead and be remembered as the loving husband that died trying to save his wife from being raped than the dude that just stood by and let it happen. You know, the reason you are reading that article is because he is still alive and was able to tell the story.

If he charged out like an idiot, he would have been killed for certain. The rapists would still rape the wife. After that, to get rid of the evidence, they would probably killed all of them, bury them somewhere remote, and go on their business as usual. Victim's family file a missing person(s) to the local police. Police does nothing, or do a half-ass/drag-out investigation, or find the rapists but got bribed into keeping it a secret.
No one would have known anything at all.

Getting your stupid self killed solves nothing. It's better to live and fight another day.

Some of us have been in life or death situations and know how we react.
Face it. you are a coward and that's that. Others of us here have some moral convictions and won't sit idly by and let our wives, girl friends, children, mothers, whoever we care about, be beaten and raped.
The pathetic justification of you'll get killed and she'll get raped anyways so why bother is sickening.
If you do nothing, like the husband in the story, your wife will hate you. You will hate yourself, and so will everyone else.
If you fight back, they may kill you, they may realize it isn't worth the hassle or risk and just leave. Killing someone tends to cause the local officials, even in shit holes, to actually do something about it.
