Wierdest Network Problem ever

GoingUp

Lifer
😕 So I just reformatted my laptop and installed Win2k. I install the network drivers for my laptop. When there is no cable connected to the laptop, the laptop shows that there is a network connection. Once I connect the ethernet cable to my nic card, my laptop tells me that there is no connection. The 10/100 light comes on, and the activity light blinks like crazy on the dongle. I can't do anything or even try to reset the IP address.... A big WTF is in order :|

Edited for more info

have you tried a different cable? perhaps it is internaly shorted.

I replugged the same cable back into my desktop that I am using to post on AT right now

ok, so the problem is with the laptop. is the laptop new? (aka: have you used this network port before?)

If it is, have you tried other drivers? such as MS's version or ones made for a "similar" nic?

The nic and the same version of the driver were working before just fine before I reformatted. I dont understand :| I havent even put on any service packs yet. Just Win2k and the Nic drivers.....

The NIC probably went bad on you. I had one do this yesterday, but on a desktop PC. Also, the NIC wouldn't show up under Hardware. But the lights would blink a bit when I plugged in the cable and it would say the network was unplugged when I plugged it in.

Edit: I switched it out with a different card, put it in the same slot and off it went. Worked fine after that of course.

you said "the activity light blinks like crazy on the dongle" this is often indicative of a bad nic
