Wierdest MS Activation story ever.

So I'm calling MS because the copy of Office 2k3 that I'm using has been reinstalled one too many times. I get this guy name "Dean". I say "Dean", because it was clear he was in an Indian call center. I think he was trying to figure out a way around the call centers proxy.

He says to me, "We are running a contest and if you answer correctly you'll never have to activate again."
I reply, "Not really, just give me my confirmation code."
He says, "Here is the question. If your company is on a domain, and uses a proxy to connect to the internet, and that proxy blocks Yahoo IM, how would you bypass the proxy?"
I was like, "Hell if I know, use a web based client?"
He says, "I don't believe that is correct, would you like me to google it?"

By this time I'm beginning to get slightly perturbed. He's wasting my time while I'm sitting @ work trying to activate this stupid product. He continues to hit me up for answers, giving me the options (clearly ones that he in the call center has) that I could do.

He says, "You can use any dos command, or change the internet settings."
I said, "Look man, I don't know. Just give me my code."

He kept going on about how he could posibably change the proxy setting.

Finally I say, "Look dude, just give me the damn code."
He says, "Ok you lose the contest though."

After all of that, he gives me the code.

So, an annoying 5 minute phone call turned into an even more annoying 15 minute phone call. Is there anyone @ MS who I could call that would give two s**t's? I swear, activation only messes with the people who actually pay for the software.

He was probably looking for a way to get around his proxy at work. There was never any such contest, the guy is a douche.

Dunno, and we'll probably never know. That said, there probably is a tick box he can mark that makes a serial never need call-in for activation. It'd probably work until another agent noticed it. ;)

If you had just given him the correct answer, the call would have been shorter. And you wouldn't have to worry about activation ever again.

My pirated copy has an added feature of typing in all the codes for me.. I think my legit copies are still sitting in some box at my parents' house.

I believe that guy was trying to learn how to bypass proxies (his CS homework? lol) from call users. Stupid on one hand, but also rather creative.

I gotta give the guy props for creativity. You should have said

"If you just give me your Yahoo email addy and password I'll remote desktop to you and fix that issue so you can have access from there." Then change his email password FTW!

Ya, I wish I had been in a bit more playful mood when I talked to him. Maybe when I call to activate my copy of XP @ the house, I can ask for Dean :-D.

Also, I think he has his hands on a grab bag of serials that never need reactivation. You know - those corporate serials for systems imaging. If you work at IBM, especially in a test environment, you always found a handful of those.

And no - I do not have Office 2003 or XP codes. I left before they gave me any.

If I took the call and I had the time, I think I would have went along. That would have been kinda cool, I think...
