Wierd XP problem

For some reason after I play a video file from my PC it freezes after I close the application (VLC, WMP, etc..). Everything appears to be fine while the video is actually playing but when I close the app the PC locks up hard (no mouse or keyboard functions). I've tried changing video card drivers but still have the same issue. I'm using an XVid codec but I don't think that's the issue as I have it installed on other machines and it causes no problems.

Any clues on what the issue might be?

XP Pro (sp2 with latest updates)
Athlon XP 2800

 
Have you tried another set of Codecs other than XVid. There are quite a few more out there.

Also, what types of video files are they?
