Here's an odd problem I haven't run into before . I have a home built i845 with stock Intel retail CPU and variable fan. It's worked falwlessly for the last 14 months. Until now.

In the last two weeks, something odd happens after I boot up the system. The cpu/mobo temps kick up about 5-7C higher than normal and stay there. The variable fan starts its characterstic accelelation. I look at the task manager for hidden drag on the prcessor, but there is none.

Now here's the wierd part. If slap the side of the case with a little "rap", the temps all drop back to normal. I discovered this when I was about to open the sides to check for dust etc. The temps then stay normal until the next morning when I turn it back on.

Any ideas whats up? I've checked for loose connections and cant find any.

Thought I'd update this thread. I checked out all my fans and they are working well. I discovered the real problem, although not the actual cause. Perhaps someone can help me with that.

The problem doesn't occur if I turn off power when I shutdown, wait 30 seconds, and turn it back on. The system is set to keep power on so I can tap the keyboard to start the boot. So the system appears to be getting a small surge thats causing the CPU to heat up an extra 5-8C. Again, if I tap the side of the case after 5 minutes, the temps come down and stay down for as long as the PC is powered up.

I'd sure like to avoid replacing the power supply if you get my drift.

Thanks again,

Alan
