I have a wireless internet in my house. i have two computers, one without any HDD space and another with alot. I am downloading a rather large file on the one with a lot of HD space, but because it's not wireless, I have to use my other computer as a server. I dont however like both computers to be running full speed because it gets quite noisy. Is there a way to put the computer acting as a server in a semi-sleep mode where it will still allow the internet to pass through it, but not be running with all its fans, kinda like standby? thanks.

I'm not sure I understand. Do you mean that you have the internet plugged into one computer, and it's broadcasting an ad-hoc wireless internet signal?

no. I have one computer hooked up to my network wirelessly with a cord coming out of the Gigabit 10/100 port into my other computer. In Windows i have the 2 connections shared.

OK, so you've got 2 computers, one of which has no HDD space and is hooked up to your neighbor's (or someone's) wireless internet, and it's sharing the signal via a 10/100 cable going to the other computer...which has HDD space.

I'd say just spend $10 and buy a cheap wireless USB NIC for the computer that has HDD space, or just move your NIC. That way (if you got another NIC) neither machine would depend on the other.

I'm not sure i'm understanding the situation. If you have some sort of wireless router, both computers whether wireless or wired should be able to connect separately to that router or a 10/100 switch connected to that router and both have a stand alone internet connection without relying on one another. Its seems you already have all the hardware you need to do this. Why you are using internet sharing connection on a home network setup is beyond me. But if you are using a server to feed the internet to other computers then it cannot be on system standby.

We're really trying here. Can you increase the detail a bit so we have some idea of what you want and what you're trying to do? So far 3 people who've tried to help you are confused. We need more information.
