I know this a strange question to ask but I've been wondering is it possible to pick up a house from the foundation and move it to another location. If it is possible how do they accomplish something like that without the house falling apart? Do they have to build a temporary foundation to transport the house?

Thanks

Yes, it is. I have seen many houses being moved, especially old historical homes. There are many restrictions such as distance, are there overpasses enroute, power/telephone lines that cross the road must be temporarioy removed. It ain't cheap.

wouldn't it depend on the house? i would imagine it would be a lot more difficult if it had a basement...

Yup. I've seen many older homes here in Atlanta moved to make room for newer (and typically ugly) developments. But yeah.....it's expensive as hell.

my in laws did this not too long ago.

It was a small house <1000sq.ft and they only moved it about a mile, but it can be done.

Yes and it's also god-damned expensive if it's a house with foundations and what not.

Its not cheap and its certainly not fast, but i've seen them move historical buildings away from crumbling cliffs.
But i think you'd have to kiss that basement goodbye ;)

Sure, houses get moved all the time. One was just moved about a mile from where I live. A friend moved one 3 years ago. bought it for a dollar but had to move it. What they do is jack the house up very carefully, after detaching all plumbing, wiring etc. from the foundation/ground. Large wooden of metal beems are ran under the house to support it, then dolly are put under the beams. The house is them towed to its new location. Kind of tricky in the city with overhead wires and such. You have to get spedial permits to do it, pay to have wires moved out of the way(generally raised up). Once it is at the new site, it is placed, then a foundation is built for it. Often the foundation rat walls, and side and back walls are already built, so only the fron wall of the foundation has to be built after the dollys and beams are removed. If a person is real lucky, not to much plaster/drywall gets cracked in transit.
