I got this new laptop , and HP zu1155 which is an omnibook 500 basically. it came with a 3com lan modem minipci card. anyways, i tried it out at my parents house on their timewarner cable modem, with a 1 port linksys router, with a 8 port 100mb hub (ancient one, cant even do 10mbs). anyways all was well.

so i come back to my apartment where we have a befsr411 the 4 port router. i figure it should work fine, but oddly it doesnt. It just loads everything really really really slow. I can still ping and tracert but its just super slow and like webpages are going so slow none of them will even load since they time out before it loads. Now i plugged it directly into the built in switch. I also have a linksys wap11 plugged into that router, and the wireless worked fine with a 3com xjack 802.11b card. I then go on campus to the library and plug into the ethernet ports there and it works great on 10mbs cisco switches and routers. Anyways, i go to best buy and buy the newest linksys 4 port befsr41 revision and it still doesnt work. I called linksys and the guy was really knowledgeable but he had no clue what it was either. Now i'm thinking this 3com minipci card doesnt like being directly connected to the linksys' built in switch but that makes no sense. btw i flashed my minipci card's firmware, notebook bios, my notebook's docking station bios, and the router's bioses, all to no effect. This makes no sense. this was all in winxp with all the newest drivers for everything. my other laptop in xp with a 3com xjack 10/100 lan card worked great. so i dunno.

Like its not that big a deal that it doesnt work, since i can use the wireless, just that transferring over my mp3s from my old machine is taking like 3 hours. but i am just curious to know if anyone has any idea why it doesnt work since it makes no sense at all. one of my friends said it could be a mac address conflict but that makes no sense. so any network gods out there have any ideas?

Im no Pro with networking at all, but I was just wondering after reading the manual on my router, did you configure and reboot the router to assign an IP for the new client, and then reboot the lappy to recieve the DHCP assigned IP from the router? I might be a million miles from the answer, but its a thought to toss around.

yea many times. i released and renewed like a billion times probably, reset the routers, etc. cycled power on the dsl modem, cycled the wap, tons of stuff. outside of this i love linksys stuff, their tech support was fairly knowledgeable about everything i told them they just had no idea how to fix my bizzarre problem. they even called it bizzare.

the linksys guy was like, uh i dont know what to say, but at least you have your wireless working and can use that still.

First off, I don't really have a good answer. However, I can sympathize. I had my pc (not a laptop) hooked up to my linksys 4 port router, and it worked fine forever and ever. I took it to a friends house for a lan and there I plugged into some old CentreCOM hub which was connected to a 1 port linksys router. Then, I brought it back to my network and it was slower than something thats really really slow. For 2 weeks I attempted to troubleshoot it, calling tech support twice (something I try to avoid). Then, boom, it worked. Its been normal speed ever since. I don't know the cause of the problem or the have a real solution, but I bet someone does, cause it has to have happened to other people.

Are your DNS servers correct? How long does it take to resolve a domain? (Try pinging www.yahoo.com and see how long it takes it to come back with its IP address, if it is an unreasonable amount, this could be your problem). Try pinging IP addresses instead of Domains... Is that faster? (With Tracert do "tracert -d <IP ADDRESS>" to keep it from doing reverse lookups on IP addresses) What is your Ping like to the LAN side of the Router? How about ping to other machines inside your Network?

ping works fine, its just slow. the DNS is right. i know it is. when i put the wireless card in and the built in lan, i get the same DNS servers on both and 2 IPs. i can disable the lan card, and the wireless is nice and fast. disabling the wireless, and running off the lan card doesnt work.

manually setting everything doesnt work.

tracert works just takes a long time. i did it with IPs and names. slow on both. fast with the wirless card. i took every other computer off the router. that didnt do anything either.

Try using a different port on your switch, and check your cable, you may want to move your laptop right next to your switch, and then plug it in with a short cable to see if that makes a difference. I don't think this is a problem with the Linksys Router.

Some cards just don't like to autonegotiate with some switches. Try setting your NIC to 100/full and check it out. Try setting 10/full, 100/half, 10/half and try different settings.

If your card decided to negotiate 100/full but the switch set the port to 100/half you would have the exact symptoms you describe.

<edit> oh yeah, like others have said...check your cable or swap with a know good one

ok it was the cable. the cable works with my other laptop but not with this one. that is really odd. i had been using this cable with this router for like 5 months too. It worked with a 15 foot belkin, but not the 50 foot apparently piece of crap my friend made me.
