my friend is having problems with his Laptop. Its an HP ZE1201.

The problem started awhile ago, what was happening was when he plugged the laptop in and charged it when it heached 100% if he unpluged the laptop is would run fine until he rebooted then the battery would be dead.

Im not sure what the problem is.
I can figure out if its the Battery that has gone bad or if it maybe the charging system or something else.

what type of metal is used in the batt?

lithiums almost never do this, however Ni-Cad/Ni-MH are notorious for dying out...

Its not an instant thing however, they just loose a LOT of thier charge capacity.... how old is the battery/computer?

How old is the battery? They have a limited life. My wife's 3 year old laptop will hold a charge for about 30 minutes then the battery goes from 75% to save your work warning to power down in 10 seconds.

how long will the computer stay running with the battery after he unplugged it? If the laptop can stay running with the battery for however long it is supposed to (2 - 3 hours) then the battery should be fine. But if it doesnt run for that long, then my guess would be that the battery is dead. From my experience, Lithium ion batteries are pretty bad too. I have seen plenty of lithium ion batteries dying long before they were supposed to.
