This post makes me think of those tree spirits (the weird white things with rickety heads) in Princess Mononoke!!

Translation for the lost:

There is a haunted area of the mountains.

Gov't built a road through it.

Drivers would get killed/into accidents trying to avoid "people" walking around on the road.

Searches of the area after these crashes found no people or evidence of people.

Accidents got so bad that the gov't finally built a seperate stretch of road, across a new bridge, to go around the haunted area.

Old road/area abandoned.

No more accidents.

My wife is Japanese, I am American...she just came over here a couple years ago to work for my company.

The post got screwed up as I had a phone call from a client and got off focus. I thought I had typed alot more than I did 🙂

We are planning on going to Japan for about 2 weeks this next year, I will get pics and I am planning now on things to get...most of the things people post in ATOT to get while in Japan are already available here 😉

They aren't supposed to be scary... they are supposed to be cutsey little spirits.

The name of the hill is Nihondaira, in Shizuoka Prefecture.

I can't find pics online....when we go there we will verify the story.

So... Curvy windy road that people drive fast on and they have accidents. Now there is a bridge (probably straighter) and there are no more accidents?

When you said you can't get to the exit or entrance, you mean the old windy road where the ghosts are, right?

I understood him to mean that the bridge was over the original road and was intended for the use of the 'ghosts'.

I will get pics once I get over there, but in the mountains where my wife's parents live there is a windy stretch of road people like to drive fast on.

The problem is many said after they swerved to avoid kids and people in the road they could not find anyone around and no where for the people to go.

This happened many many times so many that the government built a bridge over the road, ...you can't get to the entrance or exit though as a human, unless you climb up the supports.

The wierd part is the accidents have stopped in that section.

So what your saying is that the Goverment built a bridge for the "ghost" so they would no longer be on the main road causing people to wreck? hum? is that right?

Yeah, we need pics for this one.

No, the bridge is for cars, so they can go around the section of the road that's haunted.

No, the way I understand it, is it's a walk over bridge for the ghosts to go over the road. It doesn't have ramps on either side, so it's definitely not for people. In fact the only way to cross the bridge as a human would be to climb the supports on one side, cross, then climb back down.

Ok, that makes more sense. Thank you

fixed the text more....made bridge into OVERPASS 🙂

When I first read, I thought you meant an overpass over the road, so that people walk on it so when drivers see jaywalkers they know it's a ghost, because real people use the overpass... Is it so hard to say they built an overpass parallel to the old one FOR CARS TO DRIVE ON?

The construction lobby is extremely strong in Japan. Sounds like another billion dollar bridge to handle 3500 cars a day.

I doubt its a billion dollar bridge and it does not handle cars, it handles 'ghosts'....

People rarely hike on that part of the road due to no shoulders and blind turns.

I was referring to that huge bridge they built to connect an island to Honshu (?). It wasn't to suggest this bridge too cost a billion.
