So I have this 60gb 7200rpm Hitachi 2.5" HD that I put into a Bytecc HD1-U2 USB 2.0 enclosure (max 80gb).
I was able to create a 56gb partition on the drive and even copy 53gb of data into it. The data also reads out fine. The problem comes up when I try to disk scan/defrag/sandra the hard disk. The program freezes and the HD starts repeating the same noise over and over again. I waited an hour once and nothing changed.
After experimenting a bit, I found that I can't format the partition either. It only works if I tell it to quick format when I make the partition (like what I had done the first time).
I CAN format a partition though, if it only resides in the last 32gb of the drive. I tried placing small partitions at various places in the first 24gb of the disk and non of them would format.
So, it seems like there's something wrong with the first 24gb of the drive. But, I know that the first 24gb is usable because I was able to copy 53gb of data onto the disk...
So what do you guys think is going on? Is it a problem with the HD or with the enclosure?
