Curious whats so big about widescreen? I see most everyone prefers it. Do Monitors/TV's in widescreen offer better picture quality or something? Or is it because theater screens are widescreen and it gives you that feeling?

Watching a widescreen movie is fine I just don't like gaming in widescreen much.

Sigh. It's been explained countless times here. Widescreen lets you see more of the movie/whatever than full screen does since virtually every movie made today is filmed in widescreen.

I've never gamed in widescreen but clearly widescreen is the bomb for movies.

oh so you can see more of whats going on in the movie on the left and right side and less of the ceiling/floor or sky/ground? Well does the same go for games(probably not)?

As for better picture quality, yeah the vast majority of "nicer" displays that have higher resolutions are widescreen displays that support HD resolutions or computer monitors with similar aspect ratios.

Directors/Producers film their movies in widescreen resolutions, they are altered to fit on your 4:3 TV. Not sure of the history behind it though, seems like it'd be common sense to market TVs in the same resolutions that the material is filmed in.

It depends on the game. Some games are meant to be played in 16:9 instead of 4:3 or fullscreen. If not played with the proper aspec ratio, they won't look as good.

No, because you'll get the black "letterbox" bars on the top and bottom of the screen.

Have you never watched a DVD on a non-widescreen TV before??

I think the opposite issue is at hand here...he's probably never sat down and watched a movie on a NON widescreen before.

Well since im oriental, my eyes are slanted and therefore see better from side to side and thats why widescreen is better.

The first answer is yes, but you don't see less of the ceiling/floor.
You see all the movie just as it was filmed.
When they reformat movies for the tv, they chop off ends.
Ever see the "This Movie has been modified from its original version. It has been formatted to fit your screen" comment on a movie?

Buying anything other than a widescreen is pointless. More and more TV shows are being broadcast in widescreen now, so you get the benefit there, as well as movies.

LoTR is even wider then widescreen, hence the letterbox frames, even on a widescreen tv. Reminds me, I still have to watch my extended version box set.

Yes, but some of us are happy with what we already have. For now, I have no reason to get anything bigger or better then my 27" Tau that I've had for 3 years now.

Did I say anything about how you should rush out and buy one now? I said if you are buying a TV, buying anything other than widescreen is pointless. I myself have a 32" 4:3 set that I probably wont replace for a few years.
