Widescreen Support:Rant

Bleh, so sick of the devs these days. The majority of these games coming out are lacking widescreen support, and the ones that do have it are doing it wrong (for the most part). Only a few titles have released with real widescreen support. It is frustrating... That is all.

Just wanted to rant, because SW:EaW, BFME II, Galactic Civ II, KOTOR II don't have it. What a bunch of poop...

The engines and main code for a lot of those games was written before widescreen monitors became semi-widely available at the high end. I'd guess over 95% of users still have 4:3 displays.

It's like dual-core optimization, there is a lag between the hardware and the software.

Dave's mostly correct. However, HL2 supports 16:9 (1680x1050) and the code for that was started ~7 years ago. So does GTA:SA. Those are the only two games i have installed. I havent played much else since i got my 21" widescreen. Just waiting for Oblivion...stupid watch, i think its busted.

Actually the majority of the games I have right now have native WS, or is easily added with command-line or .ini change. Only some actually increase the viewing area, but with HL2 including DoD:S and CS:S this is a fair amount, CoD2 increases horizontal, UT2004 does, FEAR too. Guild Wars seems to but possibly at the expensive of vertical viewing area. BF2 of course doesn't have it and you lose vertical viewing, but of the 10 or so games I have installed I dont believe I have to play any at anything but 1680x1050. The recent slew of racers I've tried all have 1680x1050 which is pretty sweet.

The WSGF Master List has quite a few titles with added vertical viewing, even old as hell games have 16:10/16:9 native. Yet EA's brand new games still don't. Hah!

While I understand the analogy of widescreen being a semi new technology similiar to dual core, the most important difference is that if a game doesn't support dual core, no biggie, you just don't get that extra bonus. But if a game doesn't support widescreen, you are stuck with a stretched out image, which, IMO, is detrimental to the playing experience. So instead of not getting a bonus, you are actually getting penalized for having the latest/greatest technology.

This is probably what I was actually trying to say... Because EA is gobbling up all these companies, the lack of widescreen support is wide.

As far as modifing the DPS out there, I cannot STAND changing the field of view, because it always warps the image somehow... I don't like Widescreen with the fishbowl effect, no thanks.

Guildwars does support it, so does HL2 and a few others... But the question is, will Oblivion support it?

Yep... Totally agree.

All true, but there is usually no money to patch existing games unless they are huge hits.

EA of course doesn't care if you suffer. So even for top sellers they'll spend the money on hookers and beer for the top execs instead, or a fresh supply of pain whips to keep the code monkeys in line.

I am not interested in hacking to get WS working. That isn't my idea of working, because 1) field of view is messed up 2) creates more work for me 3) something gets cropped off when it is hacked in nearly every case.

That gets a  in my book... BTW, what games that have supported that resolution of yours? Be interesting to see if I have any of them.

Putting a custom resolution in an .ini file is not my idea of "hacking." The only games that offer 1440x900 in an in-game, drop-down menu are WoW and Steam-powered games (HL2.) Most others I had to add the resolution to a config file. Only a few have FoV/HuD/Menu issues, most are spot on.

Quake 3
SoF2
Call Of Duty
RtCW
NOLF2
Unreal Tournament
XIII
Doom 3
Far Cry
Warcraft III
Painkiller
Jedi Outcast
Jedi Academy

There's probably some more I've tried, but since I don't play all those games very regularly, I forget them easily.

Regardless, WS resolutions are really non-standard resolutions, and more people have 4:3/5:4 displays, so I'm not surprised that game producers don't clutter up the resoltuion menu with dozens of resolutions that 90% of players will never use.

Doom3 has serious problems getting to work with Widescreen... Heck, unless they patched it. I remember reading countless threads on the AVS forums and no one could figure out how to get it working via the config file.

Quake 3 had it built in, just needed to change it, but quake3 is old and poop, same with SoF II.

Far Cry doesn't have the right aspect ratio

Never played the other games as they are all boring to me. In addition, 90% of those games were first person shooters, which is fine, I guess, but that is just one genre out of all computer games.

I am looking for proper aspect ratio wide screen gaming without the "zoom" in feature that is found in these craptastic games.

You know, if you had just mentioned in your OP that was was nothing more than a bitch-n-moan thread about how everything you personally want is not absolutely perfect, we could have all saved some time.

Oh wait, you did. My bad. 😉
