wide screen resolution support

What happens with the video on a widescreen LCD with a native resolution of 1680x1050 when the video card can only support the standard 16:9 or 4:3 resolutions?
 
what video card? pretty much all of them support 1680x1050, even if that isn't documented anywhere. it won't be selectable when a 5:4 or 4:3 monitor is plugged in, though

my radeon 7000 does, so i'm sure a much newer one does.
