WIC is really nothin to bitch about. There are fairly clear cut guidelines about what can be bought and its to get specific nutrients.

What a shock that red states take the most government aid. (Except for Cali I guess).

They don't want the gubmint tellin' them what to do, but they'll sure take that sweet, sweet government cash.

You tax people to fund federal mandated programs and you don't expect people to take their handouts?

I would bet that most of those who accept government aid in those red states actually vote Democratic if they vote at all.

Liberals get hounded all the time about wanting to raise taxes, "if you want to pay more then go ahead". The same applies to conservatives, "if you want the government to spend less money then stop taking it". If you live in a red state, it's been shown that you're already receiving more government benefits than you pay in taxes.

I don't know exactly how WIC works, but my girlfreind who was carrying my first daughter recieved it. We were living together in the late 80s and my salary was decent then too and they gave it to us. And they gave it to my wife as well with my 2nd daughter and we did very well as a couple. So I believe there may levels of help from WIC based on income. But I would assume, especially considering me and my wife, WIC will give some level of help to most people.

I think your right - Oklahoma has a large native American Indian Reservation, and Alaska has a large percentage of Native people.

This is my idea on the majority of people receiving assistance.

Texas - 4.12% - large population of illegal immigrants
California - 3.92% - large population of illegal immigrants
Alaska - 3.80% - native americans
Oklahoma - 3.55% - native americans
Mississippi 3.45% - poverty
Louisiana - 3.43% - poverty / illegal immigrants
Arkansas - 3.39% - poverty
Arizona - illegal immigrants

It seems to me that the top states either have a large amount of illegal immigrants, native americans, or a lot of people living in poverty.

The states with the least amount of illegal immigrants and fewest people living in poverty are at the bottom of the list - Virginia, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut and New Hampshire

could've fooled me. i'm all over the ny/nj/ct tri-state areas and there are hoards of illegal day workers hanging out by the street corners.

The state as a whole may be, not each individual. Maybe each state should be in charge of its own welfare so this kind of shit doesn't happen? If people want welfare for the entire country, don't expect people not to take their handouts. People take stuff when its free. You'd be an idiot not to.

you've just looked at the statistics, assigned some explanation of your own, then derived some conclusion based on your theory spoken as though it's already proven.

These are just % nothing more, and nothing less until they publish further data. Those extrapolated speculations tends to always confirm one's pre-existing prejudices. When no more data is known, you mind tends to "fill in the blanks" with whatever you think should be there.

WTF are you talking about? Percentages are very informative. How else are you going to take into account population size differences? What other data are you waiting for?

It sounds like you're just having a knee-jerk response because you think someone is being "prejudiced." Do you also think it's prejudiced to point out that blacks are a disproportionate amount of the prison population?

I would probably take his analysis further. It's not illegals (do they really qualify for these programs) but large hispanic populations that explain California and Texas. California has the same policies as NY and Mass but is distinguished by its large hispanic population. Nothing racist about pointing that out.

I think we sold out our lowest rung people and offshored the jobs for more corporate profits instead so now we end up paying anyway. You always gotta pay one way or the other. 44,000,000 in USA on food stamps is price for putting food on china tables for your iphone and practically everything else in your house. Not so cheap after all huh.

Those are the invisible back-end costs that fans of foreign outsourcing, H-1B and L-1 visas, and mass immigration conveniently ignore while they applaud having lower front-end costs.

Obviously WIC is most utilized in Texas because they teach abstinence only education.

Seems to me that 2 of the states with the largest illegal immigrants also have the largest percentage of recipients.

Texas - 4.12%
California - 3.92%

But why is Alaska and Oklahoma 3rd and 4th?

New York with one of the largest populations in the Union is way down the list, why?

I don't know about Alaska our how the Eskimo/Native Americans are treated there, but Native Americans would make sense for Oklahoma as there are a large number of Native Americans in Oklahoma and they are unfortunately very poor living on reservations and get Federal money.

Living in a red state I can tell you a far larger portions of areas that vote Democrat, also receive the higher portion of government aid. In DFW, Houston, San Antonio, and Austin, the largest population centers, the break down of voting districts that voted Democrat is falls down the same line as the districts that take in the most government aid.
Poor people will always vote for the person that will give them a handout and those are Democrats.

To think that a Red state or a Blue state describes everyone in the state is assinine. Most states are fairly close in the divide between Red/Blue.

I lived on the WIC program when i was a pee wee

I say it helped alot.

The wingnuts say that your family should have just quietly gone into the wilderness and died. You have a duty to be sensitive to others - don't wanna make the rich people uncomfortable with your suffering as you starve to death in plain sight.

Not too invisible that's real money, real communities discengrating, real hopelessness and despair qhich has cultural effects. You know most crime is because people don't have a stake in community? You don't see middle class people shooting up liquor stores because they have something to lose. When you don't have something to lose you lose it.

Anyway all this was foreseen. perot warned us with "giant sucking sound" and many other non shill economists. We have masked the effects with debt but that illusion is waning and will be crushed once bankruptcy hits.

I wonder what we do then? Move to Chinese model of virtual slaves or model that brought us amazing prosperity almost to the bottom of society after ww2. Interesting times ahead.

Faith based conclusions at their finest. In Owsley County, Kentucky, for example, Registered repubs outnumber registered Dems almost 3:1-

Many of the counties in the poverty center of Eastern Kentucky are strongly Republican, but I'm sure that facts won't interfere with the formulation of your opinions, such as they are.

WIC is a great program. All you can buy is like Milk, juice (if the kids are older), cereal, eggs and cheese. each WIC card has a set amount of each.

Think they added fruits and veggies to them recently to. but not sure my ex-wife's sister was on it for a while
