WIA for my scanner has disappeared in XP Pro

alkemyst

No Lifer
Device manager sees the HP 4c (SCSI scanner) just fine, reports no problems; but HP's software says it's busy and Photoshop shows no WIA or HP import for it.

Anyone know how to restore this?

I have done quite a few updates in the last 2 months but haven't used my scanner since.

Assuming that when you say 'Device Manager' you mean 'Scanners and Cameras'
did you try the "Test Scanner" button? (also, check cables & power)

Provided it shows up in the 'Scanners and Cameras' but the 'Test' fails, try removing the
SCSI card and rebooting. If that fails to work, you may want to think about getting a new,
shiny USB scanner as most likely the logic board has fail to see the CCD on the scanner.

Device Manager under Imaging Devices.

Test scanner reports the scanner is busy.

A nice USB one would be great but I need 8.5x14 at least and they seem to be expensive (providing my HP 4c is still working).

same difference:
Sorry, cannot access your scanner.

Your scanner is currently being accessed by another application. Please wait for the other application to finish or close it to allow this application access.

If you are using the HP software as stated, remove it, the SCSI card, and
power down.

Boot the PC and let Windows detect the SCSI card. It will then detect the
scanner. Let it install the generic HP 6C driver. If it fails the "Test Scanner"
with the same error, you are out of luck.

Just a FYI, I have worked on hundreds of these scanners (I use one myself).

i will try pulling the card. I have tried all the rest (removed software, drivers, unplugged scanner, moved it to another port, etc).

No good on the pulling the card. I may have to just buy a new one. Bad time though as I am moving into a house in 3 weeks.

Thanks

Don't know if you bought it when they first came out, but 10 yrs+
is pretty darn good. (doubt a newer model will last as long unfortunately)

Good luck in the move. . .

Yeah, the problem is it died after trying to clean up my system....it could be coincidental, but I am probably going to reinstall XP (I am due anyway) and see if it's still dead.

Looks like the scanners I would be interested in are in the $100+ range used.

reinstalling windows (simple in XP update type) worked to fix the scanner issue.

I will probably do a full boot reinstall once I move all my files and redownload all my utilities and junk.

Thanks!
