I honestly can't imagine anybody walking into an electronics store, playing with the Xoom and the iPad 2 side-by-side, and deciding they would rather pay $100 more and get the Xoom.

Indeed.

I went to Best Buy today and played with both the IP2 and Xoom. Price difference aside, I'd still pick the iPad to be honest. I was really excited to play with an Android tablet too, but it just felt unfinished. Maybe next revision.
 
So when Sam's Club has it for sale for $539 will you come back and say you were wrong? Moto said $599 and it looks like they're keeping their promise. Nice troll attempt.

That said it's going to be tough sell for Moto. Early benchmark and tests show iPad destroying Tegra2. Not too many people are going to pay more for inferior hardware. Xoom and other Honeycomb tablets need to be sold at $300 or less if they want to have any chance against iPad2. Last gen 2.2 Froyo tablet like Tab need to be sold at $150-199. But we know that wont happen voluntary. Apple is going to continue embarrass the competition. Apple already won this round.

Not going to happen when the Xoom costs $300 to manufacturer.

The result would be the same as the current generation of Android tablet, complete shit user experience.

Reviewers are saying that Honeycomb is awesome. Only problem being it's buggy.

Also, competitors don't need to be sold for $300 to compete. All they have to be is similar in price which they are not which is their biggest problem.

I was replying to the comment that Android needs to be on $300 hardware.
We have seen how Android 2 runs on the imports from China, like crap.
Anything that runs on low end hardware will run like crap.

I was simply pointing out that the $300 price point (for any tablet) is an unachievable goal (at this point) without having a shitty user experience.

So we wait. This is like Windows Vista. While Vista and 7 are practically identical, Vista was introduced in a time when hardware wasn't good enough. Top notch hardware cut it, but those budget $600 laptops? No way. Here's what you have. Wait for quad, and maybe then Honeycomb will run fine.

Google won't tweak the OS to run right. We'll just have to wait. Kinda like how it is for phones now. 2.3 isn't really faster than 2.0. It's the brute force upgrading of hardware that made Android fast enough.

Of course 2.3 is faster than 2.0, with 2.2 they introduced a bunch of stuff to make it faster like JIT and Javascript improvements. 2.2 is a ton faster than everything before it and 2.3 has more optimizations but 2.2 had the biggest speed impact.

I agree. I finally had a chance to play with a Xoom today which was located right next to an iPad 2. I love my Android phones and all but when it comes to tablets, I'd probably choose the iPad every single time with the Xoom in its current state.

In synthetic benchmarks yes, but not in day to day usability.

I have a Witstech A81E, a Chinese 7in tablet running bone stock Froyo. Powered by an OMAP3410/SGX530 combo, it posts performance identical to smartphones on similar hardware. Which is pretty damn good for that hardware. It runs extremely well, dare I say better than some of the higher end hardware that's been half crippled by manufacturer skins and carrier bloat. There's a wide range of hardware options with those Chinese tablets, from cheap POS RockChip parts, to those powered by Samsung's Hummingbird and Nvidia's Tegra 2, to be fair though. You could pick up a sub 100 dollar Chinese tablet running a 600Mhz Pre-Cortex A8 SoC and Cupcake.

This 'its not Apple, therefore its crap' attitude needs to stop. Froyo as a tablet OS runs extremely well. Honeycomb may be 'optimized' for tablets, but Froyo and Gingerbread aren't crap as you claim. Just because its not a carbon copy of iOS does not mean its crap.

If you want to buy an iPad, fine, buy one. Its your dollar. But don't call every single Android tablet that's released junk and a poor user experience because its not a copy/paste of iOS and you're not willing to spend the 2 minutes learning how it works.

Stop putting words in my mouth.

The Xoom has perfectly fine hardware, but you won't be able to get that hardware for $300 or less because that is how much the thing costs to manufacturer.

My response was relating to the claim that Honeycomb needs to be put on sub $300 tablets and that will never happen because people wont buy it. People are not buying Gingerbread tablets on sub $300 hardware right now because IT RUNS LIKE CRAP.

That doesn't mean Android is crap as you would like to think I said.

I have a 2.1 ROM that I've been using up til November on my MIlestone. No JIT. The 2.2 CyanogenMod wasn't much faster at all. In fact it was really the same. IT was more about the features CM6 brought that made me switch.

Are you talking stock ROMs?

You imply it in every single post on this subject. I perfectly agree that the Xoom is over priced, but so is the iPad 2. These tablets ALL need to be priced ~300 or less, netbook level pricing. Right now, they are all basically toys. If you want to do real work, you spend that 500 on an actual laptop.

And again, Froyo/GB/Honeycomb all run extremely well on 300 dollar hardware, provided that 300 dollar part has enough RAM/storage. People aren't buying GB tablets because right now, none actually exist. 😛

On a side note though, give the guys over at XDA a couple of months with the Xoom and it'll be the best thing on the market. If the price combs down, it'll be much more attractive.

I know from Stock 2.0.1 to CyanogenMod 5.x(Eclair), there was a big performance boost. And again from CM5 to CM6/Froyo. But I've never ran stock Moto Froyo or Eclair on my Droid 1. Tried using Pete's 'stock-like' GB builds, and missed all the features and benefits of CM/Sapphire/Project Elite and ran back.

Yes. I'm on stock 2.2 now since I got my 1st Droid replaced recently. And stock 2.2 is certainly faster than stock 2.0, very noticeable.

When I was using CM I didn't notice the difference really, but I was also playing with cpu speeds etc so I can't accurately say what made CM faster overall. But with the stock builds there is a definite improvement from 2.0 to 2.2

LOL, Android, the OS that just needs a teenager in his mom's basement to make it work 🙂

(I love my Android stuff BTW, but I mean WTF, how is MOTO going to kick ass and take names if you have to hack the crap out of it? Joe six pack isn't going to want to do that or even know about it. I'll root friend's Android phones, but am reluctant because I don't like to be free tech support for life afterwards...)

Gingerbread (CM7) runs fine on my $200 NC.
And that uses an ancient SOC from Droid 1. Modern mid range SOC's are perfectly fine for running GB or HC.
