I have to agree with you on AC2. I loved DAoC, but AC2 is horrible, especially surprising since it's from a company that can shovel cash into the fire all day long.

I haven't played World of Warcraft and don't plan on it. Does it offer anything besides killing, leveling and getting phat lewt from named spawns?

World of Warcraft is hands down the best MMO I have ever played. I've played: Asheron's Call, Asheron's Call 2, Anarchy Online, and Dark Age of Camelot.

They have thought of EVERYTHING, I can't believe the creativity and thought put into this game. The world is HUGE...probably 2-3x the size of Dereth for those who have played Asheron's Call...and most importantly, every area is unique and creative. It isn't just the same crap over and over to make a huge world.

The ONLY shortcoming I've found is its a little too solo oriented. Grouping isn't really beneficial at this point. Leveling is slow. However, this is the first game I have ever played where I love the lower levels and its actually fun to level. Its not just rat bashing day and night. The quests are somewhat repetitive I suppose, but they are a lot more fun than rat bashing. It didn't even occur to me its repetitive until Nocturnal said it.

It may not be your cup of tea, but I strongly suggest everyone tries it...

P.S. This is the first Blizzard game I have really liked, so I am not a Blizzard fan.

I just got to play it with the Stress Test. It is digital crack cocaine! The only other MMO I have experience with is FFXI, and it blows that game out of the water in every area. Combat in the stress test with overloaded servers is faster and much more fun than it ever was in retail FFXI.

I'm a dual wielding, backstabbing, crazy fast combos Night Elf Rogue =) I'm on a PvP server and I knifed a bunch of Horde that were invading a town, fun stuff.

I don't feel like I really need to drag on about why it's so great... it isn't too late to get the stress test, check it out. I think you can still get it on Fileplanet, you may have to subscribe though.

EDIT: There are some pretty cool quests. I had one made for Rogues. I had to carefully sneak up behind a named Satyr, and pickpocket him to steal his journal. He was out on this large tree limb, you die if you fall off. If he detects you, about a dozen of his minions appear and you're pretty likely to die if you don't have Sprint yet. I got a nice new dagger for that one.

Very generic MMORPG, IMO. A couple of twists here and there. Certainly if you are looking for a level grind that will keep you busy a good long while, Blizzard will give you one. Just don't look for anything innovative. WoW adds nothing to the genre.

That's exactly how I see it. It's polished, even in beta form, but gameplay/graphics are nothing new. Those of us who have already put a few years into a major mmp probably won't find WoW very interesting, it will be popular though because the diablo/warcraft people (of which there are millions) have mostly never tried mmp's.

Im playing around with the stress test right now to try everything out. I played DAOC for 3 years on and off, probably 2 years combined. I also played FFXI for a few months and tried a few others along the way. I agree that with WOW Blizzard just seems to have taken everything good from every other game and perfected it but they threw in a bunch of their own ideas too that show up toward end-game. The graphics are unique, I like em. I believe they really did a good job with the professions like Blacksmithing and Alchemy, they're fun and useful so far. Where every other MMO went wrong this one seems to have it right, and right now except for a few bugs here and there it is flawless so far. Lots of little neat things to find throughout the game too.

I think FFXI is easily the worst MMO I've ever played with the most great ideas implemented. I think if the graphics were like WOW's you wouldn't see a great difference except that it would be more fun to play (think PvP).

All in all, IMO you won't find a better MMO in terms of balance and creativity.

Hear, hear!

I tried getting in on the Stress-Test Beta, but I cannot bring myself to pay FilePlanet $15 for 7 days of beta testing. In any event, I think Blizzard's history of committment to excellence (lame phrase, I know) is what will drive me to buy the game at launch. IMHO, Blizzard has consistently released quality titles without regard to the marketing/sales folks who want it Gold regardless of the bugs.

Besides, I want to play a rifle-wielding dwarf!

As much as I love Blizzard (they make the best titles hands down time and time again) I think I am going to pass on this one...I still cannot bring myself to pay a monthly fee in order to play a game I have already paid $40-50 for...now, if this was free on battle.net then that is a different story but we all know that isn't going to happen...

I'm not an fp subsricber and I didn't even have to wait in line to d/l the 2+ gb file the day before the stress test. Guess I got lucky.

I agree with everything you said here EXCEPT... leveling is not slow at all.
Do your quests you can get a level every couple hours even at higher level if you do nothing but quest...

do not waste your time grinding unless its a quest related grind.

I have played UO, EQ, AC AC2 AO DAOC EnB Horizons SWG Lineage2 and CoH..
and from lots and lots of grinds and harsh exp games.. this one is much much better if you just quest.
you can get a level in mid 40s in about 2-3 hours of you just quest.
very fun game..
can hardly wait for the rest of the balancing and abilites to go in.. the classes are pretty fun as they are with no talents and alot of skills missing..

You can't gain a level in 2-3 hours in the mid forties, that's just silly. It takes around 85k xp to level in the early forties and quests that are doable for that level give 5k xp max. And most that give that much take at least 30 mins each. 6 hours is a more accurate estimate. Even if you have a bunch of high levels helping you, going from 43-44 in 2-3 hours is near impossible.

I had a GM Lumberjack in UO, 4 level 55+ chars in EQ (60 War, 60 Cleric, 59 Druid, 55 Enchanter), beta tested AO and AC, 2 Rank 5s in Shadowbane, a level 30/15 thief/nin in FFXI, and a level 18 controller in City of Heroes. So I can honestly say that I've been playing mmorpgs for a decent ammount and at the same time I can say that World of Warcraft is probably the most impressive one I've ever played.

Why is it supposed to be good? Well, the answer to that question is really the fact that a lot of people automatically associate Blizzard with quality games. The other part of the answer is that a lot of people really wanted to play Warcraft in an mmorpg setting. It was just one of those "wouldn't it be cool if..." scenarios.

Why is it actually good? The game is extremely polished even though it is still months off. This is practically unheard of in an mmorpg (every single one is always a public beta). The classes are all balanced quite well, have unique roles but also have a lot of flexibility. All of the quests are engaging and fun, with enough changes to keep you interested and above all keep you moving around the world. The trade skills that I have seen are all involved while not creating a new career for your own life. Unlike EQ, you shouldn't need to be farming 6 days a week to craft for the last day. The transportation system is extremely well thought out, allowing you to quickly return to areas you've visited while not making it too easy for you to get where you shouldn't be at your level. They have a flawless implementation of instanced dungeons, you can even log out in the middle of them or run back and re-enter them (within 30 minutes). WoW also appears to have the most solid PVP since UO. Albeit, it isn't as lawless as UO, it will be a lot of fun when the game gets going.

To understand why what I have listed makes this game good. You have to look back on why other games sucked. Why Shadowbane got boring after 3 weeks, why CoH doesn't have more than 4 different dungeons, why EQ requires you to sit on your ass at the same place for 7 days straight to get 1 item, why UO had more cheating and macroing than any other game combined, why you could fight the same crab monster with a different name from level 1 to level 30 in FFXI (I sh!t you not), or why AO was basically 1 mission in an infinite loop from start to finish.

so how does the pvp work? are the classes really that balanced or is it just that the combat scenes aren't big enough to expose how bad some of the classes are? what is the maximum level, how long does it take to get there, are they essentially immune to characters a couple levels down, etc.

really, i just hate the level grind, i dunno if i want to spend any time grinding in any mmorpg right now since i don't have much time anyway. i wouldn't even attempt to PL new chars in doac except for the /level and free level system.

I've had wow beta for a while now, and I think it's pretty fun. Played MMORPG's for about 6years now, and I plan on buying wow for sure. EQ was the one to hold me the longest at 5 years, with DAoC coming in second at about 9 months.

The unique pvp battlegrounds should be a huge factor WoW adds, however those aren't in yet so there's not a whole lot of info about them. They should be something similar to the frontier zones of daoc, but a bit different.

One thing it does a bit differently than most games is enforce questing...you don't have to, but it's a pretty fast way to level if you do. Most games will have you exping in one spot over and over, doing the same spawn of mobs for several hours. While that's fun sometimes, it gets old. WoW has no real constant spawns like that, and you really never sit in one spot over and over. They've also removed a ton of the annoyances EQ and other games had.

As for paying to play, who cares? You're playing one game that will keep you immersed for days/weeks/months and maybe even years, so while playing that game, you're paying $10/mo...but how many other games have you bought? For most people, that answer is zero, or very few, since you're never bored.
