"Liking" it, is that what you're talking about?

They should replace "like" with "follow," because that's all "liking" is - flagging a story so you can follow it easily without having to leave a comment. Then if you follow a story you can give it a thumbs up or a thumbs down or leave it neutral.

"liking" this kind of news.

I think it's more of a "I saw this" mentality moreso than actually liking it.

I agree with this, half the time I "like" something it just because I saw it and I feel like it needs more attention drawn to it. I don't have to actually like what I'm seeing.

That's what happens when we dumb down language to clicking on an icon. "Like" is an ambiguous term, and can have multiple meanings depending on individual interpretation.

Also how are you supposed to like or dislike something that you may disagree with but you appreciate the reporting? When I see a youtube video about, say, a corrupt politician, do I "thumbs down" it to indicate my distaste for the situation, or "thumbs up" because I am glad someone is reporting it?

I do that when people post stuff on my fb wall. I don't have anything to say but I acknowledge that I read their message.
