Simple question. Just got my tab fees in the mail, and I have to go to emissions this year, but worst of all. . . they want me to pay $30 for a new license plate. Why is this? My current ones are shiny and still good, what is the point?

Why can't they just tax me then? It seems a waste to give me a license plate I don't need. That's like if they gave me a mint every time I paid sales tax.

They don't like you. Expect another letter from the state wanting money just so you can breathe.

most states have mandatory replacements after X number of years so the tags don't degrade too much, so they can be seen at night easily,in TX it was every 7 years.

They must've changed that, then. I've been in TX for just under 8 years now, and still no new license plates. Nowadays, they seem more concerned that the entire plate is visible (no plate frame blockage). Yeah, like the little red Texas shape in the middle of the plate isn't a dead giveaway of where you're from!
