So I found this interesting article on what constitutes a "Living Wage". Which for once linked to a site that will allow you to find out what a Living Wage is in terms of $/hr based on family composition.

So I plug in my county and get the following for Minneapolis, Minnesota which is by no means the most expensive area in the country

http://livingwage.mit.edu/counties/27053

So a living wage for a single mom with one kid you get a "Living wage" of $20.64/hr. Anyone see workers at McDonald's getting that anytime soon?

Another fun fact to come out of it is that a married couple with 2 kids actually has a lower living wage of $20.11/hr. If that doesn't make clear how inconsistent single motherhood is with reality I don't know what will.

You're already slagging off women in three or four other threads, did you really need to start another one to carry on with it?

I'm sorry do married couples not typically include women?

Sorry if reality "slags" on single motherhood.

My only guess for the 2 kids being a lower amount is tax breaks. Even still, I would love to see their (lack of) justification.

My City?
$9.24 for one adult
$19.11 for one child

I would like to see how 1 child costs more than 1 adult. Also need to define what 1 child is. Is "1 Child" still in breast feeding days? My only thought is some type of daycare, which by all means, there are ways around.

You don't normally need to pay $550/month in childcare for an adult. At least one would hope not 😉

I will give you, good child care is expensive as fuck. Not sure on $550/month, but realize this: I said GOOD child care. Good child care is not necessary - nor child care at all. My fiance grew up as little as 5 having a 10 year old brother watching over the others. Me and my fiance have talked this through, we are actually planning on her mother moving in for one of these very reasons. I find it to be an unnecessary cost.

$200/week for one child here. I don't think I can leave an 18 month old home alone all day.

a "living wage" will never be legislated with success because what it requires to live well on goes up each time it's legislated. in other words, it would increase the price everyone has to pay for labor or they get crappier stuff, and then it may further increases prices because it would put a shitload more money into circulation.

and even if it wasnt subject to the laws of economics it could never unanimously satisfy. so fuck it.

edit: i just realized that the min wage people get the money first, but they do have to spend it quickly for it to not lose value... they'd still be living paycheck to paycheck.

What I love is how "livable wage" is always under one HUGE fucking constraight: The ability to live by yourself. I have a roommate paying $500 to live in a bedroom right now, she makes over $60k. I guess she must not be making livable wages, amirite?

Christ, you need to see special education if you think "livable" wages is dictated by habitual choices in spending that can easily be prevented.

What if her mother doesn't want to move in & raise your kids for you?

What if her mother lives on the other side of the Country?

What if she's an alky or a religious fringewhack? Would you mind the latter?

So, uhh, you want a roommate with a couple of little kids under the age of 4? Really?

You do realize that for a single person with a couple of kids under the age of 4 a live wage comes out as $26.09*/hr...

Yeah even in liberals most circle-jerkish fantasy minimum wage is never going to be anywhere near that.

*disturbingly for the liberal views on "family" a living wage for a married couple and 2 kids is $20.11.
