Why you should Enable WEP

Situation:
Non comp savy sister lives in manhattan 83rd and Madison, 5 story building.
She initially had wired setup, thru Verizon, then she bought a lap top so she bought a Linksky wireless router
I was so proud of her when I visited her, because she was able to set it up. Apparently what she did was just plug the modem to the wireless router and then she was able to access the internet.

I start messing around with her setup to see if WEP was enabled and found out that she has been using her
neighbors wireless access for the past 3 months :). I had to rename her router to differentiate her router from the 2-3 other networks defaultly named "linksky"

Maybe I should just take her router home and just let her leech off the neighbors access.

Just thought I would share.

What the fvck is "linksky"? My moron-of-a-neighbor says "Linksky" when he means "Linksys" because he can't fvcking read.

meh, both my neighbors use wep. naming your router something crude then leaving it to broadcast the ssid is fun though

i just use 40 bit WEP, but i could probably go with nothing. the nearest house to me is out of range (about half a mile) and unless somebody is war driving on a tractor, i don't have to worry about that. living in the country has some benefits

I'm a couple blocks from her apartment. I'm sitting on my couch on my laptop right now. I have access to 8 personal wireless networks besides mine, 4 of which are wide open, and 1 verizon hotspot. I don't know why I even pay for internet.

Heh. I'm on someone else's wireless right now :D

I just moved, and haven't set up my own internet yet, so I'm squatting on somebody else's for the time being. N00bs + wireless routers = free internet for the neighbors

I'll bet that "Linksky" is Linksys being "cute" by appending "sky" to the end of their name?

Thats exactly my home situation, (rural), I dont even have broadband available.

I was just surprised with the number of networks in her building that was unsecured.
Maybe the manufacturers should leave the WEP on by default, this would probably result in to many
phone support questions.

braodcasting a funny ssid might be a good idea though, dont want to do the vulgar bit, they might take offence.

I live in a condo and I have a centrino laptop. I have been getting free internet for the past 2 months and the connection is pretty fast. Is it illegal to do this?

I would have been more proud of her if she didn't get Verizon or the router and leached off of her neighbor. ;)

BTW, pics?

of course it is, assuming you asked the neighbor for permission to leech.

Is stealing legal?

i live in a court....u shaped road. any war driver would be a tad suspiscious i think. a guy sitting in a car with a laptop on isn't hard to see heh.... plus my neighbors are old. think most people are too paranoid about their wifi. i use 40bit wep too.
