Why you probably won’t get a raise this year

Wishful thinkers have been hoping 2014 will be a year of fatter paychecks. After all, corporate profits are strong, unemployment is falling and the economy seems to be recovering for real.

Reality is harsher. While most companies are in good shape, there is still so much slack in the job market that few workers have the leverage to demand much of a pay increase.

“Employers have learned they can squeeze more and more out of their workforce.”

Google doesn't have to offer higher pay and a lot of perks... People would still want to work for google. Google does those things to keep good employees.

If you have nothing to offer a company beyond your current skills... No you wont get a raise. A lot of companies understand the importance of keeping and attracting talent... even in this economy.

Henry Ford paid his workers pretty good. It was not because of him wanting his workers to afford his product. Ford was experiencing a very high turnover rate and the higher pay kept skilled workers.

I won't get a raise just like I haven't in the last 5 years. But I'm overpaid by about 100% so I don't care.

Why do you deserve to make more money for doing the same work? It's different in the case of businesses, their costs don't remain fixed from year to year and it costs them a little more each time to make the same products.

A lot of companies are still fearful of the new Obamacare mandate costs. Thanks to what would have been the cancellations notices going out to millions of people right before the midterm elections Obama decided to push it back yet again.

Based on conservations with my colleagues (managers and supervisors) the base raise for this year is 3.75% and will go into effect in April.

My employees, I have 12 FT and 5 PT, get a flat 6% CoL raise each year and a "silent" performance-based EOY bonus, that generally ranges from 1-5%. That's a choice however, and if another company won't or can't do that, then that's up to them. There are other job options available out there. My salary is only $1 each year however, and I've never gotten a raise. :(

A lot of companies? Less than 5% of businesses have 50 or more employees and I'd wager that a majority of those companies already offer their employers health care (except of course, the walmarts and the mcdonalds and the like).

Why are you so completely clueless when it comes to the ACA? In every thread you comment on about the ACA, you are wrong, and you continuously spread misinformation.

Do you just like repeating what you are told with no fact checking done by yourself? Or do you just enjoy lying?

I agree, you shouldn't, but you should deserve a pay raise if you're doing the same job better than you were before. If businesses weren't posting record profits, then that would be one thing, but many of them are. Take the worker out of the corporation and you have nothing.

I'm no socialist, but companies that take care of their employees tend to perform better. Unfortunately that's not always the case (Wal-Mart for example), but in many cases it does.

Are you paying yourself in dividends so you can pay a lower tax rate?

Over the last 6 year I've had a 100% increase in wages.

This year I've been told I'm going to get a "substantial" increase. Which is due next Friday on the paycheck.

I'm going to roll the dice and see what happens. I'm a conservatard, and I should be fired, right? I will know on Tuesday when I have my 1-on-1 director meeting where its likely going to be discussed. I can't wait to report the results.

thought this was going to be a link to identify the ACA as the culprit...because god knows spending is down across many industries, but especially the Health industry, due to it. Didn't realize the OP was completely oblivious...guess i don't frequent this section enough to know better.

I'm a skilled worker and good at my job, so I expect to be getting at least 7%, based on what my coworkers have seen so far this year.

The companies he is bitching about are ones that just happen to be large corporations the vast majority having well over 50 employees. Those are the ones typically on everyone's radar of corporations making all kinds of profits and not hiring. And yes, from your link, 211,000 businesses are a lot of businesses, like I said.

He better be. I never kept my salary that low. In some countries I know they have a minimum salary that you have to take but I guess in the US you don't.

Regardless that really only works in a company that has 1 or very few shareholders.

Corps aren't posting record profits by giving pay raises to all their employees.

They cut pay where they could. Labor market is still shitty. Power is still weighed heavily with employers, not employees. Pay raise?, no, not for most.

Oh yea, I got a pay raise, 13%, I doubt this blinds me to whats going on in the rest of the economy though.

Better hope equity markets continue to ramp so we can party on the "wealth effect". Doubt growing world turmoil is going to invite more risk taking though....

Don't know how other companies do pay raises, but I got my 3% base "cost of living adjustment" + plus a 3.5% "merit" increase. Everyone gets the cost of living adjustment. Not everyone gets a merit increase.

Got a 20% raise + a 10% bonus.

Then again, I single handily generated $7.8 million yearly reoccurring revenue for my company. I actually still felt ripped off.

humility is a virtue

While its fun to rub a raise in the nose of demotards, its not the right thing to do. Its possible that I got a sizable raise not long ago along with a very nice bonus. However its not right to talk about that. Some people are not as fortunate.
