Why you catch a cold when you are not dressed warm enough <My theory>

My theory:

Your body's internal temperature is high enough to kill most cold/flu viruses that enter your body.
but when you are cold such as not wearing a heavy enough coat when outside, your core body temp drops.

that's would give the cold/flu virus a better chance at surviving.

/My theory

Interesting theory but, wrong. 98.6 is just warm enough to make virus' happy. Being cold suppresses your immune system, that is why you're more likely to catch a bug.

You’re a great man and I’m no scientist (I do play one on the internet) but I think you’re both wrong.

In the winter I go out in a tee shirt and no coat and I live in NY. Yes I got some blubber to protect me, but I’m on my 4th year with no cold. Not even a sniffle. *knocks on tree*

I belive the cold kills all the viruses. There’s another guy on here who hasn’t had a cold in years.

Cold doesn't kill virus'. What part of "more likely" didn't you understand? Maybe it's the trees you're knocking on.

If cold and wet was dangerous, the people in England would all be dead.

I do remember reading that the flu virus doesn't like humidity so that's why it's prevalent in the winter. But I did not stay at a Holiday Inn recently.

A lot of bro science in this thread. You are more likely to get colds when the weather is cold and we spend more time indoors sharing germs with other people. Cold air makes it easier for virus to penetrate the mucous in our nasal passages.

I'm always being fussed at about wearing a coat in the winter. I've gained a lot of moms through the years 😛.

I think oral hygiene is a huge component of preventing sickness through winters. Like... really huge. You could add to that hygiene in general, but I think the whole wash your hands bit people emphasize should prove the value of hygiene in general.

this is mostly true in northern locations.

cold viruses are circulating all year long but manifest mostly when we gather together in groups inside when it is cold outside. The main factors are the strength of your immune system and the strain of virus you are exposed to.

No one yet mentioned vitamin D(3), and the relationship with the immune system, and how we get less of it in the winter months?

I haven't shaved or got a hair cut in 5 months. And I haven't so much as coughed a single time during those 5 months. I think this is the secret to not getting sick.

Only con, depending on who you ask, I either look like a rugged mountain man, or a crazy homeless person. I guess not a con if you're trying to look like either.

Also, my diet's absolutely awful. basically zero fruits or vegetables. For instance all I've eaten this week has been the loaded 3 cheese macaroni and cheese I made on Monday. 1lb of macaroni + 3.5'ish lbs of cheeses + a quarts of half + half & a quart of whole milk. Plus a stick of butter, unsalted of course, as I'm conscious of my sodium intake (joke joke, but I do use unsalted butter) Maybe all the cheese is the secret to making it hard to catch a cold. I know when I eat this much Mac & Cheese over 3-4 days it makes it hard for me to poop.

The reason why cold virus wins more often in the winter than the summer is due to multiple variables. #1 - Colder air is drier than warm, warming air dries it out (furnace) and this dry air dries up our mucus membranes responsible for trapping much of the airborn viruses and bacteria we are exposed to. When they are drier, they are less effective. #2 - People tend to spend more time indoors with questionable air quality.
.
You can get a cold in the summer, they just are less common in adults, though a cold will roll through a school in May and September pretty or daycare in July pretty easily.
