I tried to buy an e7200. And all they want $100 or plus. At the same time, it is easy to buy G0 Q6600 for $150.

Yes, this is generally true.

Based on your thread title, I thought you were going to offer an explanation.

supply and demand.

why? cuz 7200 is a 45nm technology which is just getting refreshed to i7.

The g0 is a 65nm technology, old, and already was refreshed by the yorkfield class.

So yes, generally the older tech will cost less then the newer one despite which is better.

Fry's had them on sale a couple of weeks ago for $80.

I don't understand why you think that Q6600's being $150 should make E7200's cheaper.

Not to be too much of a Doubting Thomas, but where is the ease in getting a q6600 for $150? Just checked microcenter and the egg, they both have em for $180.

I'm still hanging on and waiting for news of Deneb, but a $150 Q6600 would be a complete no-brainer for my next build.

I believe he is referring to the for sale forum here on anandtech. i just bought a q6600 for that price too 🙂

yep got a 7200 got 86 shipped last week. But to be honest, if you doing heavy duty threaded apps I think q6600 G0 is much faster. if you cant find a 7200 for sub 100 maybe a e5200 which is similar just 1mb less cache, I think 5-10% diff in benches.

That was last week, and the bastards cancelled my order. :|

hey zap, don't you already got a quad? I remember you from a previous quad thread.

I think the OP wonders why the e7200 doesn't cost half as much as the q6600 because it basically appears to be 1/2 the chip (2x2.5GHz versus 4x2.4GHz).

The real answer has been addressed already: new versus old technology. e7200 is a newer generation chip, doing more work in the same cycles, with lower power consumption, albeit with half as many cores.

The smart-assed answer would be: because Intel said so!

Yeah, a Q9400. I also have two E6850, one E6420, one E6550, one E8500... all unused and sitting in various motherboards or desk drawers. This isn't counting an A64x2 and a Phenom quadcore. Whoops, that makes two quads collecting dust.

I know people who collect arcade cabinets, and people who go out to bars a few nights a week, and people who go to indian casinos, and people who have poker night. I can safely say that my hobby doesn't cost any more than other people's hobbies, and indeed has a better residual value (except for arcade cabinets). 😀

Zap -- you should get those things folding for the TeAm (198).

Or donate them to me -- I'll gladly add them to my folding farm.

I don't have the money to buy that much hardware but I bet I'm up there when it comes to buying DDR2 ram sticks. Must have owned about a dozen sets at one point then just needed money and sold about 6 of them. Better than burning away cash in casinos I say. That's pretty much giving money away. At least we got plenty stuff to show 'em grandkids. :]

So the OP thinks twice as many cores should cost twice as much? Look at performance though; twice as many core rarely leads to almost twice the performance. Most of the time it offers very little performance gain.

They charge what the market will bare.
