Why wouldn't WMP be able to play a DVD?

Trying to play the SuperTroopers DVD I just rented, & WMP says a suitable DVD decoder is not installed.

WTF?

It's a freakin' DVD!

I think you have to buy a software decoder? Did any programs come with your DVD Drive?

i'm not sure that windows includes a dvd decoder, it might rely on a hardware dvd decoder. or a software one provided by another program.

try downloading a shareware one, and see if windows'll pick it up and use it.

I was playing Blade II the other day using WMP...

Gratned I have formatted & re-installed since then, but it's not like it's an unusual file format.

[EDIT]Geez, apparently you do have to install 3rd party DVD capability to play them. This blows, I have no clue where my PowerDVD disc is...[/EDIT]

Um, because then MS would have to pay royalties to the DVD consortium. The DVD decoder is "external" just like the MP3 encoding plugin. You have to pay for it. Installing a 3rd party software player will usually install the dlls and such that WMP will use to play it, but my Hollywood+ decoder doesn't :|
