why wouldn't a mobo recognize a sound card?

I had been using onboard sound for a few months then I broke down and bought a hercules GTXP 7.1 from a fellow ATer. After installing, I get power to the breakout box, but WinXP doesn't recognize a new card.

This was the first PCI card in my box so I though it might be a problem with PCI, but I installed a raid card and WinXP found that right away.

I d/l drivers from Hercules, and it appears that they went in successfully, but still nothing shows up in Device Manager.

I've disabled onboard sound in my BIOS... any ideas?

I've had an issue with my old sblive card, it often took multiple insert/removals for it to even get detected by the bios. Look at the post screen, see if it mentions "multimedia device" when the card is inserted (assuming onboard sound is disabled, it should be the only one.) That will at least narrow it down to it being detected in the slot, or if windows just dosen't have the proper driver installed to recognize it.

I tried each of the PCI slots but nada.

I wonder if the card could be bad.. hope not because I like (even though many people don't) the add features of the breakout box.

Often there is jumper on the mother board that you have to move. Check the manual.

Was going to suggest the same thing. The BIOS can have a bug but the jumper would be a sure thing I would guess.
