What I hope for is, one day, someone with an 18 wheeler will come barreling down the highway at 85 MPH on the LEFT lane and clear out all the fucking left lane cruisers. That would really bring a smile to my face. Oh, you think 70 MPH is fast enough and you refuse to move over? PERFECT! Now you're run the fuck over.

Why?

When on the highway if they speed limit is 70, most people are doing 75-80, why would you choose to drive 55 or 60? Especially during rush hour? Why?

Probably because they live in Virginia.. and got 3" of snow...so of course, the world must stop driving for them.

You're what's wrong with drivers. The posted speed limit is the MAXIMUM, not the minimum. They're likely driving within their abilities, which is appreciated.

LOL! If you truly believe that, you need to be hit in the head with a 2x4. If their ability is that diminished, they shouldn't be driving.

As long as slow pokes stay to the right, and the passing lane is actually passing, I don't give a shit.

Who's to say it's diminished? How about they're simply comfortable with their vehicle at that speed and realize it won't add any significant time to their trip?

Next time you're going to try and tell me how so or fast I can push my cart in a grocery store, or how much time I can take at the drive-through.

I apologize, though. I forgot everyone was on this planet to please you.

Srsly yesterday I was doing like 105 on I-75 and a truck cut me off, fail. If they aren't going as fast as me, don't be in the right lane seriously guys

He probably cut you off on accident because he didn't expect somebody to be going 105.

Maybe they just had 3 hours of mandatory socializing with co-workers and they were wore out from that.

Why?

When on the highway if they speed limit is 70, most people are doing 75-80, why would you choose to drive 55 or 60? Especially during rush hour? Why?

When on a main street where the speed limit is 45 but most people are doing 50, why would you choose to drive 35? Especially during rush hour? Why?

What is the reasoning for this?

During rush hour, traffic may be too heavy to make the speed limit. You drive at the speed of traffic. But I feel your pain, it rained in Phoenix today. You'd think people have never driven with a little water on the road. Omigosh! I'd better drive 45 on the interstate.

Vehicles traveling on the road at a significantly lower speed than the rest of traffic are a traffic hazard. I won't explain why because if you don't know this already I can't imagine any attempt to educate you on the subject would be successful.

Since the minimum on most interstate roads is 45, it is within their legal right to do so.

I'll drive under the speed limit for two reasons.
1. External conditions don't support a higher speed. EG the roads are garbage.
2. I'm trying to save gas.

Soy un Mexicano.

Around here, that's the most common reason someone is driving 10-15 mph under the posted limit.

In the SF Bay area, it usually an old Asian woman.

Me, if the weather is very bad, I'll drive less than the posted limit, regardless of how everyone else is driving...but it's gotta be VERY bad.

If you are unable to pass me, something is wrong with YOU.
If you're driving very slowly in the left lane, well...

Doesn't the 1st person to the traffic light win?

Yes!

I drive in MI. The speed limits are regarded as what the flow of traffic should be. Go over to Detroit and drive 10 under and let me know how your day ends up.

Michigan is one of those states where the speed limit is usually regarded as the minimum. Hell - I-94 changes to 55mph in Detroit and people still go 85mph. It probably helps you almost never seen a state trooper in that area of 94 except when there is an accident

Sometimes I really, really want to 'nudge' someone over. There is no one in the right lane and I want to go faster than you. Why won't you get over?!

Or the always enjoyed 'I'm going 61.1mph but I really want to pass this person going 61mph so everyone behind me must wait even though the speed limit is 70mph'.

Several reasons:

keep in mind that includes keeping pace with traffic around you, you can get a ticket for driving too slow on a highway

Only if you hold up other cars and don't allow them to pass. It is not against the law if you are not impeding other traffic.

Depends on your area - there are minimum highway speeds here in Michigan. I believe the law is written such that 'driving below the speed posted would impede the normal flow of traffic' not 'IF driving below the speed posted impeded the normal flow of traffic'

Bad weather? Running out of gas? REALLY shitty car?

Would have to be a very non-normative scenario.

If you want to drive slow, move the hell over and let the faster traffic pass you. It's simple really.

There aren't enough people with California freeway driving experience on this forum for me to have a discussion about this with. Driving in Southern California is so much different than driving in other parts of the nation.
