why would you drive 10 or 15 mph below the speed limit?

Why?

When on the highway if they speed limit is 70, most people are doing 75-80, why would you choose to drive 55 or 60? Especially during rush hour? Why?

When on a main street where the speed limit is 45 but most people are doing 50, why would you choose to drive 35? Especially during rush hour? Why?

What is the reasoning for this?

You're what's wrong with drivers. The posted speed limit is the MAXIMUM, not the minimum. They're likely driving within their abilities, which is appreciated.

Alone, that's true but every fucking day I see asshole dipshits driving 50 in the fast or second to fast lane when everyone around them is doing 65 and they WON"T MERGE. People need to do within 5-10 mph of the speed limit on a highway/freeway or get the fuck off it and take side roads. If you want to do 50, you could easily find a road that is 45 that would do the same. Don't slow down all traffic on the freeway. I'm not a big speeder I try to stay within 5 mph of the speed limit up and down, I expect everyone else to do the same or get the fuck out of the way.

I would like to add that almost every single person I see who drives below the speed limit is constantly making traffic inducing mistakes while driving. I seriously should start a driving school to teach these fuckers how to drive.

I was driving below the speed limit but that was mostly because of the snow we just received.

Yes, because all laws are absolute. Do you honestly never go above the posted maximum? Do you never jaywalk? Do you report your online purchases from out of state vendors on your annual tax returns? Speed limits are often arbitrary, sometimes set low, and sometimes too high (there's a tight off ramp at the 495 georgia exit which I would never take at the post limit, I think something like 20 mph).

When did I ever mention law?

Also, I always go above the posted maximum. I almost always jaywalk. I don't report everything on my taxes.

But I do the things I do, because I'm comfortable doing it.

Sorry, I thought you were that guy who always says the speed limit is not a suggestion. I can understand if they don't feel comfortable going fast (often times I don't) but in that case make room for the people who do want to speed. Normally I'll hang out in the fast lanes but today I was mosying along at about 55-60...in the right lane (limit is 65).

Just to piss off impatient pricks like you. Why do you do 10 over when it saves you a couple minutes at best, or no time at all when you get stuck at the same stop light/sign as everyone a few miles up ahead.

Doesn't the 1st person to the traffic light win?

Reminds me of those redneck badge of honor decals "I'm not speeding, I'm qualifying".

I just have to shake my head at people. I drive a 2 lane highway every day to work. It's about 10 miles between my house and "town". There's a 4 way stop sign halfway between my house and town and then a pile of stoplights once you get to the edge of the city.

I drive the speed limit or a couple over every day because there just simply is no reason to speed on the road. You gain nothing. But it never fails theres the same impatient pricks that pass you going 70 or 80 only to be stopped a mile or two ahead and at the same stop sign or stop light as you.

I just have to ask again...what's really the point?

Several reasons:

1. their car can't go that fast without too much strain (55-65 is a reasonable expectation of all highway vehicles, but some states with 75+ limits is pretty redonkulous)

2. more fuel efficient - on some rare occasions I've dropped down in speed and drafted behind semis @ ~55 in a 65+ zone in order to increase my chances of making it to a gas station while on road trips

3. they're not a speeding douchenozzle. Speed limit is supposed to be the maximum, not the minimum or average. I'm not sure what the laws are in all the states but here its anything above 5mph over the limit and you automatically qualify for infractions against your license (if you get caught)

4. you complaint doesn't hold any value unless these drivers are going that slow in the faster passing lanes. You have no right to complain unless these drivers are blocking your ability to pass them. I can understand it on some 50mph non-highway roads where you don't always have a passing lane and people treat them like they're a common 35mph road, but on the bigger highways with passing lanes you really sound like a dbag.

At any rate, traffic would be 10x better at least if everyone used cruise control on highways, I hate getting passed by some rubber-banding retard only to have to immediately get over to pass him as he merges back into my lane and slows down, to which he immediately speeds back up because how dare I pass him up, lol

You drive what is a safe speed for the conditions, not whats based on the maximum.

keep in mind that includes keeping pace with traffic around you, you can get a ticket for driving too slow on a highway

negative

I drive in MI. The speed limits are regarded as what the flow of traffic should be. Go over to Detroit and drive 10 under and let me know how your day ends up.

the best is when they're timed and you can beat them all

I know the timing of the lights near my house. I figured if I hit one yellow and go a little faster than usual I can hit the rest of the greens, rather than all reds. They haven't fixed the lights yet.

I don't have such a problem with people driving a bit under sometimes.
What I hate is one road near me.

There's a 60mph section, then 30mph, then 60.
People drive 45~50 in the 60mph bit, then slow down to about 35~40mph for the 30, then go back to 45~50 in the 60mph.

You're going to drive under the limit when the roads are clear and you can reasonably go 70, but drive over the limit through the built up town with lots of parked cars and people walking around? What the hell.
