I do not understand what the big deal with these things are. I mean, 10" laptops are nothing new, yet you call it a "netbook" or "smart book" and suddenly life comes back to them?

I tried typing on a netbook in a store, and my hands were too big, fuck them.

I honestly don't know. It's probably too big to carry around everywhere, too small to use easily, and too weak to do anything cool on.

Why are you people still discussing this.

These things are for WOMEN or kids. NOT MEN*.

It's 2010 already.. People who don't get netbooks never will..Which is sad, because a small/cheap computer for sub-$300 isn't all that hard to understand. $500 netbooks or 12" screen netbooks? That, I don't get.. But it's really forcing the ULV market to come down market, decent ultra slim pcs used to cost 4 figures, without price pressure from netbooks.

Its the new fashion accessory.
Just wait until you see licensing deals with designers. You will start seeing these EVERYWHERE.

what am i going to do with a netbook that i can't do on my desktop pc or laptop? small screen, low power (as in processor, graphics, etc), and tiny keyboard isn't attractive to me.

some people might actually have no need for them. $250 is expensive for something that i'll rarely, if ever, use.

I don't really understand the need for something between a smartphone and a laptop.

At that point, you're going to have something too big to carry everywhere, but too small to be very useful compared to laptops that are only slightly larger. Why would I want to carry around a 10" netbook/smartbook when I can just use my much smaller iPhone that I'm already carrying? If I'm at home/in a hotel room traveling, why wouldn't I just use a fully-featured laptop or desktop? These things all seem like novelties to me.

same dickheads who buy netbooks for $400. unless its less than $250, it's a sham, just like most netbooks today.

The same, tired "I don't need it so no one does!" argument. I can't see myself ever using a dildo, but there sure as hell is a market for dildos.

Ditto for netbooks - they're selling like hot cakes... You might not be that mobile and can't see yourself in a situation that requires a small, honestly junkable, simple device for checking email on the go - add up to 8 hours of battery life on the new breed and it makes complete sense to have one if you're a student, traveler, or just mobile.

I have a macbook pro (2008 model) that costs more than 8 netbooks.. I don't want that to get stolen, so I bring out my MSI Wind.. I've had it for 2 years and couldn't care less if someone steals it from my messenger bag - it cost $300 and I've gotten enough use out of it to not care if something happens to it.. Sure, there are $500 laptops out there but they tend to have sub-2 hour battery life and are way to big to just have by your side in a shoulder bag. During my x-mas trip I used my netbook to check email, watch xvids, charge my phone while away from a plug, and kill time while waiting for flights.

the thing is, most of them are ridiculously overpriced when i was shopping for one. Anything less than $300 is really really crap. anything that i would want to use (like the lenovo s series or ion) is already at $500

There are a lot of $300 netbooks.. Dell mini10, HP makes a great one (own it). The problem is when people try to do too much with their netbooks, i.e. high def video - do we reallly need high def video on a 10.1" screen? Ion hikes up the price but I haven't seen a situation where I could have used the ion...Now, flash acceleration would be great for hulu in full screen, but hulu hd stutters at times on my HTPC (quad core!), so I have a feeling the problem is with crummy programming on Adobe's end more than anything.

This. I also apply this to the majority of netbooks. Finally Asus made one worth having.

My Dell Mini 10v was well under $500 (about 250). We have a couple desktops, a laptop (XPS 1330), and I have a Macbook Pro for work. We got the mini for using ad a dvd player on trips and for the kids to use for playing games. Our son dropped my wifes XPS once and I'd rather he dropped a cheap netbook than her XPS. The netbook was more than replacing our mobile dvd player that died but not that much more.

They use a special, low power CPU specifically designed to be dirt cheap and the laptops themselves are dirt cheap.
Before the day of the netbook the only tiny laptop was that stupid Sony thing that cost about 1500 bucks and it was a piece of shit besides.

The same thing that makes companies think smartphones are worth $530 unlocked - some people will pay for it.

That's a pretty standard price for a smart phone. Blackberries cost about $500 without a contract or $100 with a 3-year contract. Apple's first iPhone was something like $500 with a 3-year contract, making it the most expensive phone I've ever seen, yet thousands of people own one. Right now I think they're down to about $100-200 with contract or $600 without a contract.

I think a $300 phone or a $200 ipod touch or $300 netbook are not really that bad. I get to read anandtech while using the bathroom ;)
