Why would new memory be rejected by my mobo?

Hi there

I'm trying to upgrade my ECS 760-M Motherboard. It's currently sitting in an Athlon 64 3400+ and I have two sticks of memory, one of 512 and the other 256. I'd like 2GB as I'm using the PC as a DAW. The mobo's manafacturer says the following on it's website:

Memory
? Supports DDR400/333/266/200 memory
? Accommodates two unbuffered 2.5V
? A total maximum capacity 2 GB
This motherboard accommodates two 184-pin 2.5V unbuffered Double Data Rate (DDR)
SDRAM (Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory) memory modules, and can support DDR400/DDR333/DDR266/DDR200 memory types. Each module can be installed
with 1GB of memory, and its total maximum memory size is 2 GB.
DDR SDRAM memory module table
Memory module Memory Bus
DDR266 133MHz
DDR333 166MHz
DDR400 200MHz
DDR200 100MHz

Long and short is I bought a matching pair of 1GB DIMM sticks off EBAY. Each one says on it "1GB DDR 400MHz CL3 ECC PC3200R-30330" and the chips have 'Hynix" written on them. I've tried them in every possible configuration (on their own and in each slot) with the same effect - continuous beeping and the machine refuses to boot up.

I thought I was buying the correct memory....but have a made a bad mistake?

Very grateful for any words of wisdom ;)

Thanks and kind regards from the UK

Bill
p.s. I've taken pictures of the memory that's working plus the ones that are not if anyone's interested enough to take a quick look.....

Thanks Henessy - yup, afraid I tried both of them, in boh slots, both individually and together - exactly the same result every time. Put my old memory back in, no problems.

I've just received this answer from another forum....

Sorry but,

I believe this is registered, error correcting (buffered) memory.

It will not work in your board. It's for a server motherboard.

Does this ring true to any of you guys? If so then either (i) I'm just a dummy for not knowing enough about memory or (ii) I've been ripped off. I thought 184-pin, DDR400 SDRAM PC3200 kind of covered all the bases....

Again, any further thoughts very greatly appreciated. I'm always amazed that there are knowledgeable people out there who are willing to give their time for free on a Sunday night - there is a god after all :)
