Why would new memory be rejected by my mobo?

Hi there

I'm trying to upgrade the memory on my ECS 760-M Motherboard. It's currently sitting in an Athlon 64 3400+ and I have two sticks of memory, one of 512 and the other 256. I'd like 2GB as I'm using the PC as a DAW. The mobo's manafacturer says the following on it's website:

Memory
? Supports DDR400/333/266/200 memory
? Accommodates two unbuffered 2.5V
? A total maximum capacity 2 GB
This motherboard accommodates two 184-pin 2.5V unbuffered Double Data Rate (DDR)
SDRAM (Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory) memory modules, and can support DDR400/DDR333/DDR266/DDR200 memory types. Each module can be installed
with 1GB of memory, and its total maximum memory size is 2 GB.
DDR SDRAM memory module table
Memory module Memory Bus
DDR266 133MHz
DDR333 166MHz
DDR400 200MHz
DDR200 100MHz

Long and short is I bought a matching pair of HP 1GB DIMM sticks off EBAY. Each one says on it "1GB DDR 400MHz CL3 ECC PC3200R-30330" and the chips have 'Hynix" written on them. I've tried them in every possible configuration (on their own and in each slot) with the same effect - continuous beeping and the machine refuses to boot up.

I thought I was buying the correct memory....but have a made a bad mistake?

Very grateful for any words of wisdom ;)

Thanks and kind regards from the UK

Bill

p.s. I've taken pictures of the memory that's working plus the ones that are not if anyone's interested enough to take a quick look.....

according to ecs as per your 760-M manual ..ECC isn't listed as being supported by your mobo

The ECC part of the purchased memory specs is what is incompatible.

Used to be back in the day that mobos would ignore ECC if they couldn't support it, I guess that's not the case with DDR. You could always try to set up your mobo with manual memory settings. Who knows, it might work if you can get the mobo to ignore the info in the SPD ROMs. Set it to manual ram timings while the original memory is in there, then power down and put the new RAM in. See what happens. Once you've got the new modules at least running at the old memory's speeds, you can tweak the timings for what the new memory can handle.

In general I guess it is wise to avoid RAM that is ECC and/or Registered unless you are running a server mobo that is known to support those features. I know that no amount of tweaking will get registered modules to work on a non-registered mobo. I was under the impression that it could be possible with ECC modules. I also thought that registered modules were notched differently so they wouldn't even plug into a standard RAM socket.

If the seller did not clearly state that the memory you bought was Registered, then you should have recourse to get your money back due to a misleading listing. I didn't see any modules on the hp site that weren't both ECC and registered. As I said above, registered won't work, period. ECC alone might be made to work.

1GB DDR 400MHz CL3 ECC PC3200R-30330

Note the R in the part number..it's registered memory, it will NOT work, it is meant for server/workstation boards that support registered memory..
