Why would having a video card installed...

I have an old Abit NF7-M (with onboard graphics). I had a GeForce4 ti4200 installed on it to override the onboard graphics. With the 4200 installed, CPU temps (via MBM) were around 55 when the PC was not in use. I just removed the 4200 yesterday, and the CPU temps plummeted by 10 degrees (I'm now using onboard graphics).

Why?

And it blocks any airflow going through the space the card was in.

Your ambient temps would give you the answer.
