Why would anyone want a handheld scanner?

I bought one, I guess for $100 or so probably almost 10 years ago. 5 - 6 years ago I got a flatbed scanner, which died today. A few months ago I threw out my handheld scanner, simply tossed it in the trash. I had the original box, everything, but I figured that nobody would want a handheld scanner when you can buy a flatbed scanner for $30-40 nowadays, if you watch the sales/rebates, etc. But I just saw a handheld scanner for sale at eBay and it's been bid up to $22, $35 with shipping. Why?

Portability. If you're in the field and need to scan something like text documents onto your laptop it's the only way to go.

Guess I blew it when I threw out my Artec hand scanner then. It was as new, AFAIK. I should have posted first. I didn't dream.

The scanner I bought last night on eBay looks like a possibility for portability in a laptop. Light, small, doesn't require an AC adapter: Auction I won - CANON CanoScan LIDE 35

I use a canon Lide 20 which is pretty good for it's size and price.

There is a good chance you could get it into a laptop bag and of course it doesn't need a power supply.

I was checking out the Lide 20 last night. They have it at outpost.com, but not the lide 35. Reason I checked there was I saw posts from people saying they scored the LIDE 35 for <$40 (after rebates, I believe) at Fry's. I couldn't find a deal online for under $80, though, except for that eBay auction. I had < 20 min. to make up my mind before the auction ended. I think I'll be really happy with it - it's small, quick. The one feature it lacks that I'm aware of and care about at this point is the ability to scan negatives - it's something I'd use if I had it.

Edit: And the LIDE 20 and 35 use very little power anyway - 2.4 watts, 1.5 watts standby.
