Why would anyone pirate movies in the US?

People pirate because they're selfish and have a low self worth.
BS it's cultural not universal feeling. IP is a modern western invention which many cultures don't respect. China and Russia for two.

Most here don't respect it much either. Can't tell you how many professionals out there who make a living from IP but go home and pirate TV and movies themselves as well.

Because you forgot to include the cost of broadband, and that's only when/where it's available. Also, do you need special hardware to receive the stream, or does Netflix give that to you for free? If not, there's more cost right there.

Not everyone has access to high-speed internet 🙁

I'm convinced a lot of people pirate because they're hoarders. Look at the bandwidth some people claim they use "legitimately" (yeah, right) There's no way they can watch all of what they download.

Oh for sure they will. In Canada, virtually all standard broadband packages are capped at 60GB. Most companies have an "extreme" type plan which bumps it to 100GB. If you need more than that, you don't really have the option, that's as high as it goes. I suspect you guys will be hearing a lot more about caps soon.

In the north, some ISPs cap their extreme packages at 10GB a month... lol.
my ISP doesn't cap mine, and i'm scared shitless that they're about to. AFAIK, they're the only local provider that doesn't.

anyhoo, i echo your sentiments. no hulu for Canuckistan 🙁

i also agree with Dr. P... it seems that people horde data, in all forms. i work with a dude that collects mp3s. i don't even think he listens to half of the music he downloads. quite strange, but we all have our quirks 😉

Netflix streaming selection sucks. Really hard decision between pirating Inglourious Basterds Blu-ray rip vs SD streaming of some old 80's shit.

<< poorest college student :O I don't pirate many movies tho, maybe 1-3 per year. TV shows nowadays are better made than movies.

Netflix streaming pisses me off, the only movies I can watch instantly are movies I don't want to watch. Arrrr!

The streaming services dont have a content level the pirate services do.. for now.

Roku is headed in the right direction, if they can get everyone on board.

Consumers will always find something to whine about, even when they get amazing services like Netflix. Then they'll use that whining to justify stealing (piracy).

Pisses me off that we don't have services like Netflix to complain about here in Canaduh. So stupid.

I'd gladly pay $8.99 for unlimited movie streaming. I can find some good quality streaming for free, but it's usually megavideo which you can only view 72 minutes or so then you have to wait almost an hour to continue.

I guess a lot more can be found in the form of torrents, but then that's only good when enough people are seeding, and you don't really know what you're getting till it's finished downloading.

A good reliable service where you could stream high quality and RECENT content would be worth paying for. I'd pay for it, and I don't make a shit ton of money either. Saving time and hassle is worth money.

Nobody is trying to justify piracy. It's just that services like Netflix don't really offer a compelling alternative to piracy.

Forget morality/culture. Arnt you guys worried about statutory fines when pirating? It's like automatic $7500 per item I believe and you can be traced by FBI pretty easy. Not worth it.

Only if you upload (which is what you're doing with Bitorrent). Usenet, Rapidshare, etc is just downloading. Nobody has every been charged with downloading content. It's uploading aka distribution which is what the *IAAs go after.

I guess if you have a decent job and make 10$ in 20 minutes then its not a big deal. If you are in college it probably is. I remember in college spending 20$ on something seemed like a HUGE deal, now I wouldn't even have a second thought about losing 20 bucks.

What I don't get is how Rapidshare can get away with this. Based in Switzerland you'd think they would be shut down by now. They are not only uploading but hosting the data as well.

I thought the streaming feature was saved for old movies that no one really wants to watch any more?

If this is false I definitely want to try netflix out. I am not interested in them shipping a DVD to my house. When my fiancee and I want to watch a movie, it's right then... not in 2 days.
